Would an Arab traveler w/ white slaves be able to travel freely in the old south?

Make him from Brazil. Haiti slaughtered it’s white people in the 1790s and outlawed slavery when it got independence in 1804.

Yeah, Brazil, that’s, um, what I meant to say. I know Britain outlawed slavery well before the US civil war and I’m pretty sure France did as well.

When Chang and Eng, the celebrated “Siamese Twins,” retired from show biz, they bought a farm in North Carolina and owned slaves. Apparently the neighbors were cool with that.

Brazil was the last country in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery. It was in 1888.

Thanks to those of you who did the research on some of the states and how they compare. You can see why a woman from Tennessee might get a little sensitive to “historical blindness.” Being guilty is bad enough. (The sins of the fathers…)

I distinguish between “The Old South” and the Confederate States. I am obviously not up to snuff on history, but I don’t consider most of Texas, most of Florida, or most of Missouri to be “Old South.”

At least I don’t have to eat my bonnet.

Although, to be fair to New York State :), I don’t know that those statistics of how long there was slavery in New York vs. Tennessee means much. New York had slavery for a longer period of time because it had been settled by white people longer. If Tennesee had been settled at the same time New York had, slavery would probably have been instituted at that time.
