Would any of you technology lovers recommend a cell phone that would work for me and my wife?

Thought you should be aware of this:

Best Buy walks away from Huawei, leaving it with zero US retail partners

I second this. I bought a use/refurbed Samsung Galaxy S5 through Amazon, about 2 years ago. You can go to Amazon’s “Cell Phones” catagory, pick “Android” and "Unlocked’ and start scrolling through the list. Look for phones that say AT&T or GSM, for compatibility. If you are looking for expandable memory (not having it would be a deal breaker for me), your kind of stuck with Samsung and LG. It seems everyone else likes being able to charge way to much for larger amounts in internal memory.

I think it’s going to be the 6"+ that may blow your budgets. There are a number of phones around 5", but 6" becomes much rarer.

I was super lucky to get it when I did. I think this decision may be why I got it for $200 instead of $249.

Again, I don’t need 6" for my wife and I already got mine(5.93 inches).

She would be fine with 5", I think.

Wow, if you aren’t doing that on purpose…

I almost thought you were suggesting I was getting a cheaper phone for my spouse than I got for myself(not true!). Then I re-read my own post and…

OK, very funny, buddy. And no, I did not intend that.

I meant my wife specifically wants a 5 or 5.5 inch screen maximum because her pockets on her pants won’t hold anything else more comfortably.

My experience with that brand is less than spectacular. They don’t have enough on-board memory. Plus having root access is important to me, and people don’t seem to provide ways to root them. So I can’t install, for example, the best Adblocker I’ve found, Adaway, or its companion YouTube Adaway. Nor can I get around the storage issue.

Then again, I only had a cheap Tracphone model. If it actually has 16 or 32GB, maybe that’s fine–if you don’t mind ads.

That said, if it has security flaws, then those should be useful for root. Maybe it’s just that this was an older model.

The 7x had 3GB memory, while the Mate SE has 4 GB, which reviews have indicated really improved the performance over time. Mate SE is also 64GB storage space instead of 32GB.

I’m still thinking of Honor 6X for my wife. Anyone have one?

Got my wife an Honor 6x, which came today. $140, free shipping, has a good new case(not the cheapo one provided), and has a screen protector(she keeps it in her purse). All included and pretty nice.

We’ll see.

I am composing this on my phone which is a Note 4. I love this phone so much that I have found a backup on Craigslist here in New York City and purchase it for a song. I also purchased this device on Craigslist and it was very inexpensive. To me very inexpensive for smartphone is around $200.

I like it because you can open it up and remove the battery. You can also open it up and it cert and expanded memory chip. Almost all newer phones are sealed. Not only do I not find a convenient, I don’t like being able to add my own memory expansion if I wish. This is the phone for me !!

I hope you have a lot of satisfaction from the device that you have just purchased.

BUMP - It has now been two and a half years and I am back asking again.

My Huawei Mate SE is fantastic and works as well as the day I got it. Amazing phone, no issues.

My wife’s Honor 6X looks like it does not support VoLTE and will stop being able to make calls in January. I don’t really get it, but it does appear to be the case. Her phone still works great otherwise and we have about 2 1/2 months to replace it.

I would immediately have bought the latest Huawei Mate or Huawei Honor phone, but I have heard they no longer can have Google Play to get all the apps. I thought about switching over to Xiaomi and getting one of their Redmi phones, but…they also don’t have Google Play?

I’d like to replace my wife’s phone(by Xmas time, but not as a gift) with something in the $200-$250 range that is:

  • 64GB or more on-device space
  • has a pretty good camera (one of the less great parts of her Honor 6)
  • has a headphone jack(I heard they took these out of some phones)
  • A nice, roughly 6 inch or more screen
  • Android or EMUI(but must have google play store)

I’ll show you two phones I would have considered had they not had Google Play removed for reasons.

Huawei Mate P30

Xiaomi Redmi 9

Wait, is it super easy to just add the Google Play store? Is it not being pre-loaded no big deal and you can just get it in two seconds on your own anyway?
