Itā€™s just an old cliche that dates back to when people got married at a young age and were moving out of their family homes and setting up a household after the wedding. So you bought them basic household essentials. Nowadays, itā€™s far more common for a couple getting married to have already set up their home and have all those basic essentials. So you buy them some luxury good as a gift. ---
