I donated to the Getty Owl foundation. One of our dopers has a beautiful little girl with the horrible disease known as spinal muscular atrophy. He set up the foundation to assist babies and children with this illness – a most worthy cause in my opinion. ---

I have donated, both solicitated and unsolicitated a few times. Nothing I couldn’t afford to give, but worthy causes nonetheless. The recent fustercluck wouldn’t keep me from doing it again if I felt that it was a genuine need. ---

I donated thousands to other Dopers and members of my own board over the years. Probably just over $5-6,000. I also donated at least 4 computers, at least 3 or 4 free airline tickets, some cooking equipment, some food, and other things. Given my recent shitty maltreatment on a subject related to that, no, never again will I donate except to someone who is an actual personal friend. I don’t _need_ gratitude, but neither do I _need_ to be slurred and have it implied I’m a fucking dishonest lowlife thief. Fuck that shit sideways with a rusty razor blade. ---

And I was taken out to dinner by many Dopers who met me (yes, people have actually met me IRL). One Doper drove me several hundred miles across her State just to show me sights. I may have re-gifted cash, but I can’t re-gift gifts. My point in this paragraph is to clarify it wasn’t all one-sided, poor oppressed and put-on Una, wah, wah. But my new view is it’s better to be much more judicious and careful about either donating **or** receiving things, because I don’t need any more psychodrama than already exists. I think it reduces the chance of hurt feelings later on on either side. ---

I’ve not donated to anyone here on the Dope (yet) but have paid for subscriptions for online friends on other sites when they couldn’t afford it. Their virtual company made it a worthwhile investment! I’m unimpressed by Lute’s shenanigans here, but it wouldn’t put me off donating money or sponsoring someone in future. A very kind Doper recently sponsored me for my upcoming 5K run, so I’d like to pay it forward at some point 🙂 ---

I don’t mainly because of the “Feed a man a fish or teach a man to fish” Philosophy. **Lute Skywatcher** , is a text book example. He makes piss poor decisions with his money and his priorities are just as piss poor. Now, if someone were asking for money because they needed a nice suit and a haircut so they could go on job interviews, I’d be more than happy to help out with that. But “I need money so I can take care of my multiple pets that I have no business owning in the first place?” No thanks. ---

I’ve been on the receiving end of a sweet offer from a Doper and I accepted it. My husband thought it was weird, but I feel like a person doesn’t offer a generosity unless they really wanted to help. I’ll never forget the kindness and it has inspired me on many occasions to pay it forward. There has been one occasion that I wanted to reach out to a Doper but I felt shy about it and didn’t. I really should have and I regret not doing it. ---

I donated to a Doper in need and would do it again. I don’t have a lot of extra money, but I’m doing okay. It is a great feeling to be a (small) part of one of those group actions to help a truly needy online acquaintance. I got a nice thank you email, too. ---
