Would it be a good idea to build a massive border fence?

It would be so easy to fix. Prosecute the companies that employ them. Do you think when a guy jumps the border and walks into an employment office, they can not tell? They work cheap and they can be cheated. They can not go to authorities if you screw them over. I suppose in rare cases there are people who walk across the borders, that have first rate forged documents and speak perfect English. But that would not be the norm. We deal with symptoms in America. we do not fix problems.

Sage Rat, Are you a natural born US citizen?

Right.
It’s disheartening to me to hear this kind of stuff coming from the good, kind, everyday people in my life… my family, my neighbors, my friends. When I was a kid, I always thought of “racism” as meaning “hating black people” and it was something bad, ignorant people did. People where I grew up weren’t “racist”, they weren’t mean to black people. I didn’t then understand that the word encompasses a whole spectrum of thoughts and behaviors.

A certain sector of our population has been calling Mexicans lazy criminals who come here to steal our jobs and exploit our nation since the mid-1800’s. In that same time frame, nearly as many Mexicans as Blacks were lynched. Some sources estimate that nearly 60% of people targeted and shipped back to Mexico by way of the Mexican Repatriation Act were perfectly legitimate US citizens. Hell, our anti-marijuana laws were almost entirely crafted around the concepts of the lazy illegal Mexicans with their marihuana and those hopped-up Jazz musicians with their crazy reefer sticks. It turns out racism against Mexicans is not a new story. It just saddens me as an adult to see it playing out in this day and age.

About the OP, the way I see it is that you don’t stop drug use by arresting the meth addict, and you don’t stop illegal immigration by blowing up hungry, poor people with landmines. You (and Sage Rat) can do your part by paying higher prices for locally and ethically produced goods from domestic producers who do not exploit slave labor. Yes, it’s more expensive and yes it takes a little trouble to seek out ethically-produced goods, and no, you won’t be able to buy anything from Wal-Mart’s produce section, but if the subject of exploited labor or illegal immigration troubles you, then I’d expect you to do these things. If instead you simply label brown-skinned field workers as “wanted criminals who devalue our nation” and carry on enjoying your cheap tomatoes, then you’re every bit to blame for any problems you perceive in our imported labor force. You are creating the problem and then postulating blowing up the symptom with landmines. Only it’s not a symptom, it’s poor people who come to do a job that Americans aren’t willing to pay other Americans to do.

Yes. You have those options. It is inconvenient and expensive to only buy things that are produced without use of illegal or slave labor. The vast majority of Americans (including yourself, apparently) are not willing to drive the extra mile to the farmers’ market or the mom-and-pop butcher shop, and once you get there, you’re sure as hell not gonna pay $5/lb for tomatoes that were picked by a white guy with paid benefits.

No, that would be “getting shafted” and out of the question. Honestly dude, you can’t have it both ways. If you don’t like illegal immigration, don’t use your cash money to tell our nation’s agriculture industry that you do.

If Undocumented-Americans hurt the economy they would have built this five minutes after they worked out Undocumenteds hurt the economy. But they don’t, they’re an incredibly flexible supply of cheap labor, they’re incredibly beneficial to the economy even if they didn’t pay a dollar in taxes. That’s why we’ll never have a border fence, or if we do it’ll be because we’ve set up a legal immigration program that allows as many Undocumenteds as needed to come over.

Of course not. Canadians speak English!

Any type of “wall” or “border patrol” that exsists or is created is just a pacifying gesture to the squeaky wheels who live in the area.
Politicians have absolutely no interest in stopping illegal immigration, period. Any promises or statements made against it are just lip service.

A real solution is simple and cheap but no one will ever do it because no one wants to do it. Heavy, heavy fines and jail time to those renting to illegals, employing illegals, educating illegals, giving health care to illegals.
Take away any incentive to come into the country and your problem is solved.
No wall or border patrol needed.
Politicians will never do this. They have no reason to. If they don’t consider it a problem and it’s only a vocal few complaining they’ll continue with their joke of “cracking down on illegal immigration”.
