What I’ve been wondering is, were there any additional negotiations/agreements between early November, 1980 (the election) and late January 1981 (Regan’s swearing in). If Carter had been re-elected in November, would the Iranians have thought “Nope, no way we are holding on to these folks for another 4 years, and we’ve gotten all we are going to get through negotiations, we might as well release them.” Leading to the hostages being released 2 months earlier than they were.
Yes, there were negotiations going on from the late summer all the way through January. The result was the Algiers Accords - you can google it. As I said earlier, Carter’s Deputy Secretary of State was in charge of those negotiations throughout the process.
I’m not quite sure I’m following the second part of your post. I don’t think that there was any realistic chance that the hostages could have been released in November or December, as the negotiations were quite difficult on matters of compensation.
