I see the problem you had with it, Indygrrl. There was no reason to tag on the “especially African American” part. “Motif” and “Genre” would be names that reflected the vocation of any parent who was a writer, and by sticking in the side note, the implication was pretty clear – “these are stupid, but a black person could get away with them, because you know they give their kids dumb names.”
It was a backhanded insult. I don’t know if I’d be offended per se, but I’d likely call the poster on it.
While I don’t know the specifics of the “Shithead” name and whether or not there is any truth to it, I have personally spoken with a customer of my company’s whose name is “Shitonya.”
OK, you guys can call bullshit on me if you like, but I am an RN in a hospital and I have seen the name “Shithead” with my own two eyes. It was not a story related to me by a FOAF, I saw it with MY OWN EYES!..it was a Muslim or Indian name or something, and it was the first name of a child I was caring for. It was not pronounced Shit Head, but still. Awful.
Just last night when I worked, I went to my unit’s phlebotomist to collect some lab labels I needed, and while going through her labels to get my own, I came across a 60 something year old man’s label and his name was, I kid you NOT…Dick Head. Of course I"m sure his real name was Richard, but there it was in black and white, the dude went by the name Dick Head. She said “We’ve been laughing about that poor man all night!”
