I mentioned this in the married name thread & was surprised at the response. I don’t want to continue the hijack, so here’s a new thread. My sister’s huband has 3 younger sisters. A few years ago the middle one worked as a stripper for a while. I don’t remember exactly how long, probably a year (+/- 6 months). She was in her early 20s at the time. From what I know it was in your typical shabby bar environment - she wasn’t a Vegas showgirl or anything. I could tell you more about what makes the family dysfunctional (there’s a LOT of material to work with), but perhaps it’s not germane to the discussion. What I found shocking and inappropriate is that their Mom decided the best way to approach the situation was to bring the whole family to a “performance” as a show of support (my BIL didn’t go). What do other people think of this? ---

Proud? No. Tolerant and accepting? Sure. And if she were interested at all, I’d go watch a show and lend moral support. While the activity might be distasteful to some, it’s legal and it involves consenting adults. ---

I wouldn’t be ashamed - I think it’s a shitty profession, but nothing to be ashamed of (not like telemarketing 😛 ). I’ve had friends who’ve danced for the money, the good work hours (four hours of work a night and all day free to go to class) and even a sense of empowerment and conquering their sexual issues. But I wouldn’t drag the family to see her dance because A) eeew. I wouldn’t wanna see my older sis strip, thank you. and B) I’d be afraid I’d embarrass her, distract her, kill her tips for the night or all of the above. C) I don’t think Opal wants to be mentioned here. Still, it’s a better response than kicking her out, which I’ve seen happen far too often. ---

That this last part should have been up to each family member, individually, to decide upon, after direct, on-the-level conversation with the sister. Rather than group-organized. Like **phouka** said, I would not be “proud”, but not ashamed or condemnatory either, if a relative of mine is doing this freely and assuming full responsibility for her actions. I’d certainly be discreet about it – and my supportiveness would surely have a strong undercurrent of meanwhile-lemme-help-ya-find-a-better-job(or at least a classier gig). ---

Several of my students became strippers after high school. I’ve also had one who was a stripper while **in** high school. Made for interesting times for the Work Experience teacher, who is supposed to check out the workplaces of students getting credit. :eek: I think he sent his wife to do the checking. ---

Heck, I’m a neo-pagan. I _don’t_ think sex is evil. I would not automatically think it was bad or be ashamed of her. I would be supportive of the sister. Dunno if I’d want to go to see her though… ---

I dont currently have a sister, she died in 1965 from leukemia, but I woudnt mind if my brother was a chippendales [or whoever the male strippers are that tour around] Last I saw last summer at the beach, he is pretty buff for a 45 year old=) Heavy labor must be good for building a body without it getting all yucky bulgy like Ahnold ---

I wouldn’t be **proud** necessarily, but I wouldn’t be ashamed either. I’d hope she was at a good club at least. I wouldn’t want to go see her perform though, as I’ve got no desire to watch any women doing that, much less my own sister. ---

As a stripper, no, but everybody does distasteful stuff for a living: I wouldn’t hold it against her, even if it is about 2nd to last on the _legal_ professions I have respect for. I second that I have less respect for telemarketers. But if my sister were a prostitute, and made just as much money as you can make as a good stripper (as opposed to being a drug-addled street girl,) I’d have more respect for her than if she were a stripper. Something about strippers, and Hooters girls and the like, just seems, I don’t know how to put it, but that feeling isn’t there as much with prostitutes. ---

Well, I did wander into a random strip club 300 miles from home one night to find my cousin working. Luckily, my cousin was male and he was working as a bouncer, else that might have been just a bit more weird then it already was.
