There is a help-wanted ad in our subway that simply says the following in large letters (with the name of the company). Would you be put off or offended by that phraseology? WE’RE NOT HIRING YES-MEN ---

I thought it was a really weird ad. It made me wonder “What kind of men ARE they looking for?” i.e. they are not hiring women. I thought it sounded like a bunch of men wrote the ad. ---

It is a bit confusing but I would take it as they are not hiring those people who conform and go along, they state they are looking for free thinkers, but this way of going about it indicates to me that ‘yes men’ are exactly what they desire and so it would be a turn off to apply. ---

Answered no in the poll, but I feel like a middle option would have been better. I’m not turned off by it, but it doesn’t communicate very much to me that is useful information. First off, plenty of companies have said “We want free thinkers!” on a banner at the company picnic and then when you get back to the office it’s “… but only if your opinion is the same as your supervisor’s.” I also suspect that it’s intended to appeal to millennials but the pitch is reinforcing a stereotype of so-called millennial values. That doesn’t seem like a very promising start. ---

I guess I’m just not easily offended. If I were an employee I wouldn’t hire Yes-men, either. And I’d want to encourage other kinds of workers to apply. ---

This sort of reminds me of an ad I saw fairly frequently in the paper when I lived in Albuquerque. It said something to the effect that they were hiring several lazy people and a couple of hard-working ones for an office with a “rock-‘n’-roll environment.” This was in the days before the Internet, and you had to send your application to a post-office box, so there was no way of telling even what type of company this was or even where it was. I did send an inquiry but never received a response. ---
