Then maybe don’t buy your groceries at a liquor store and instead go to a grocery store?
Even though they might carry other stuff, that’s one store I don’t find it odd they’d try to keep kids out of.

Uh, what if I want to buy liquor?
Our liquor laws are dumb. I am a Californian, where liquor is sold in the supermarket and nobody worries about it, and the world hasn’t come tumbling down yet.
Same here in MA. Most stores that sell beer/wine/liquor do tastings, and they just check your ID before they pour. Takes about 10 seconds. This includes grocery stores that sell alcohol and dedicated liquor stores which (gasp!) allow children in. We don’t, afaik, have an epidemic of alcoholism amongst 8 year olds.
Thass’s called hicccup plannin’ ahead. Isswhut resssssponsible folk do. hiccup
Theft of children?
One memory of mine is going to the beer outlet with my either my grandfather, my dad, or one of my uncles as a kid. My grandparents had a kegerator in their basement, so they were always going up there to get a new one. They had lollipops behind the counter for kids.
Here in PA, you can only buy booze at state-run stores, or beer outlets. Every once in awhile, there will be some motion to change that, but I doubt it’ll happen any time soon. It’s too big of a cash cow for the state.
Yep – in fact one of the major incidents in the Hatfield/McCoy feud happened on Election Day.
Heh. I wish that there were MORE stores that didn’t allow kids. I detest having to be around peoples’ noisy, obnoxious, nasty kids when I do my shopping. I have zero problem with well-behaved kids, but those are very few and far between.
I see 10x the number of ’ noisy, obnoxious, nasty’ adults when I shop than I do kids. Nobody seems to care about that though. It is only when they are small and defenseless that we want to smack them down and tell them they aren’t welcome. Weird.
The larger Spec’s locations are almost as much deli/fine foods stores as they are beer/wine/liquor stores.
The one near me sells all sorts of gourmet and imported food- fresh, frozen and canned, and also a fair quantity of prepared foods, and also has a deli counter and roasts their own coffee on-site. Between that and the stuff like specialty sodas, it’s probably easily 40% of the floor space of the store.
There’s definitely stuff that I can’t get anywhere else, or if I can, it’s at somewhere like Jimmy’s, which is kind of a pain to get to and to park at, unlike Spec’s.
I suppose I can go to the toy store, but if I want to buy a bottle of wine, I kind of have to go to a place that sells alcohol.
As a (somewhat longwinded) aside, I don’t “want” to take my kid shopping with me, I’m responsible for caring for the child, and I have shopping to do. Most parents would be happy to shop without having to deal with a bored 4 year old the entire time.
You think Brony detests noisy, obnoxious kids? What do you think the parents think about it? They have to listen to that shit the entire time they’re in the store, from about 2 feet away, not for 30 seconds while passing in the aisle. They get to listen to it in the parking lot, in the car, and at the next 3 stores they have to go to. I guarantee they’re not thinking “Wow, this is a lot better than shopping by myself, I have to remember to do this the next time I need groceries. Look at those child-free suckers, they’re not arguing with anyone about candy bars or toys, don’t they see how much fun I’m having?”
Yes but it’s California so that can happen at any time.
It’s about school kids congregating around the small local shops and stealing sweets. Some small shop owners restrict the number of unaccompanied minors that are allowed in the store at any one time, so they can keep an eye on them. These are really small shops, about the size of a small room. And not relevant to the OP.
Heck, in the UK, kids are allowed in most pubs these days, let alone shops socialising in alcohol. They can drink beer and wine from age 16 with a meal (with an adult). We have a MUCH more relaxed booze culture.
