They’ll just have to let the cats and dogs on that one.

24/7? I’d commit suicide by mod in less than a day.

But it would seem like it, regardless of actual length.

LOL an ET on the Spadefish was hauled off topside in a hug be jacket and a kicker of thorazine, and it had not been his first cruise …

Used to have to do a serious shrink consult to get into the sub program no idea if you still have to. My uncle was turned down because he bit his nails so he ended up surface fleet.

I figured they must have to screen pretty strictly to make sure they were getting people who could live like that. There’d be utter mayhem if they didn’t.

It isn’t even in the category of ‘things you can just make yourself do if they’re going to shoot you otherwise.’ Or, at any rate, it probably is for some people; but not for others.

Well, of the few hundred submariners I actually know/knew, one could say that -
they were not claustrophobic
they were stable - they could be sort of nuts but they had to be stable in their nuttiness
[frex, one guy - “Cinco” when we knew him, he was 23 years old, and had married fresh out of boot camp/nuke school, and divorced 6 months later [don’t let your buddies marry their nuke school piece of tail, they are just looking to get out of Idaho] married and divorced again 2 more times - when over for dinner with his newest girlfriend stated he wanted to be married and divorced 5 times by the time he was 25. I also drew my service weapon on him because he was drawing back to punch his girlfriend because apparently she didn’t know she was the next divorce candidate and objected. One simply does not punch a woman in my presence. [Feel free to knuckle it out with a man, he can defend himself, but nobody smacks a woman around in my presence.] But yet he was considered stable enough to be a bubblehead. Another guy “Fast Flood Floyd” decided to hit the fast flood control at the pier ‘to see what would happen’ which thankfully was blocked off.

I know, the submarine crews have to be a certain amount of loopy to want to spend interminible weeks and months at sea with 135 if your closest friends =) [and one can learn a lot, I knew how to disable the commanders private shower hot water recirculation pump =) I used to do dependent cruises hanging out in machinery =)]

not quoting the whole post but taking the rest of it also into consideration –

It’s possible that they couldn’t manage both to screen out people who couldn’t deal with the living conditions, and also to screen out people who weren’t generally sensible, while still winding up with enough people to crew the submarines.

That is, I expect there was an overlap that had some people in it – but maybe not very many.

If you get banned would they put you off in a boat or at least wait until we were in port?

We’d have to come up with a new term. Instead of cornfielded, you’re visiting Davey Jones.

I’ve done a few cruises, two solo in the Caribbean. I brought plenty of weed with me without a problem. Also, each island we visited offered easy access to people happy to help.

Indeed. We coincidentally docked in Jamaica on Bob Marley’s birthday.

Folks were celebrating.

Heh. We could have a dinner where we could only day Dope memes. And there is one from 20 years ago that might be heard going down the corridors which I’m not going to repeat since we are more refined these days.

I landed at the airport in Jamaica and bought some weed from a dude who was helping me with my luggage. I was holding the baggie and I looked up and saw a cop. He was decked out in camo, with an AK looking gun slung over his shoulders. My jaw dropped, he chuckled.

Totally, in fact I’m shocked that it’s not already a reality program.

Which reminds me, I once had the idea to pitch a reality show where I would live inside an actual Wal-Mart for a year. Sleep in a tent. Snack on the food. Hassle the shoppers. Well, it sounded good at the time…

> Have you considered that there’s probably a very high correlation between people who have never been on cruises and people who don’t enjoy such things?

I agree.

I’ve never been on a cruise. And I doubt I’ll ever go on one. Perhaps I’m an oddball, but I just don’t know what I would like about it.

It seems a big attraction is the _food_. But I’m not a foodie, and couldn’t care less about gourmet food. I also don’t see the appeal of wandering around tourist towns. And correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems like you have to adhere to a rigid schedule: dinner is served at this time, you must be back on the ship by this time, etc. Most importantly, though, I know I would hate the confinement. I would feel trapped. I like the freedom of being on land, with my own transpiration, and doing whatever I want.

That”s one of the main attractions of travel for me, and having to pay for uneaten ship food while I seek exotic fare ashore puts a damper on the whole experience. I don’t care how much attention the ship puts into serving local cuisine while in port, it’s just not as exciting or authentic as a random eatery in town.
