You are young. I suspect the average 68 year old would prefer a few incidents of sickness over the years than to die tomorrow.
No way. I’ve never had the flu, and I almost never get colds. Maybe one a year where I’m mildly sniffly and tired for 2-3 days.
Nope. I may get one cold per year–none this year so far. A few symptoms easily treated with OTC & home remedies & an excuse to take a day or 2 off…
Flu sucks but getting a shot every year minimizes my chance of getting it again.
Height? I grew up long ago.
I’ve had the Flue twice, bad enough to notice it. Lost about a week the first time, lost about 2 weeks the second time.
That’s a long way from loosing 3 years. If you add in just being sick and miserable from a cold, sure that would add up, but would I rather be dead than sick and miserable? I’ve never been that sick from a cold.
No vote here.
I take very good care of myself and very rarely get ill - once every 3 or 4 years I get a cold or virus and it’s usually over quickly - so it wouldn’t make sense to make that bargain.
I have poor digestion though (my main reason for clean living is to keep that under control) and would gladly give up three years after 70 to never vomit again!
Nope.
I’ve gotten a cold twice in the last 30 or so years - they were unpleasant occurences but didn’t really slow me down. I seriously do not get sick. And flu, for real, once three years ago…that utterly sucked donkey dong but it barely lasted a week. Flu once in 56 years or a cold every 20 years or so isn’t a big deal.
I’ve already got my three bonus years and I’m keeping them.
when i’ve had a flue on a second story house i let a chimney sweep take care of it. on a single story house i’ve handled it ok.
colds no problem.
I’d be curious to know how many Dopers would elect to suffer from the flu every three years in an exchange for an extra three years of life.
Or, in case you’ve never experienced the flu before, a cold every three months.
The last cold I had was bad in that it robbed me of my sense of smell for a week. Which means I couldn’t enjoy a single meal. I was so sad! I’ve only had the flu once, but that was one flu too many for me. So I wouldn’t take either of these. I would for a million dollars, but not for three years.
I would not. I’ve had only one instance of the flu that actually required preparation to crawl to the bathroom to pee, and it took about 30 minutes to move 20 feet to achieve that goal. I was lucky enough to have good neighbors that pumped me with chicken soup the entire week that I was sick.
I won’t lie; there were moments that I wished for death. Every nerve in my body hurt. Breathing hurt. Watching TV hurt. Blinking hurt.
But most people get over it. It took a few weeks to fully recover, but I did recover. Bad as it hurt, it was only for a week.
Give me my 3 years.
Absolutely not. I don’t even remember the last time I had a cold or the flu. I’ve got other health issues, but nothing viral.
Plus, I’m 68. Three years is a lot.
Its not so bad anymore now that I take things to boost my immune system at the first symptoms, but I used to lose 2-4 weeks a year due to colds, flus and opportunistic infections that followed these illnesses.
3 fewer years of lying in my own shit in a fugue state in exchange for not dealing with that? yes
Nope. I want to live as long as possible. I only half joke about not dying until I’ve read everything I want to read.
NO, and especially not if I’m going to die in two years.
Now, if the options were dying at 96 vs 99 and the same deal, I might consider it.
But probably not. These “bargains” tend to come at greater cost. As the saying goes, be careful what you wish for!
