No, and I have a family.

Basically there are a limited number of technology company hotbeds in the country, and I live in one of them. I can’t imagine feeling like any job is so awesome that I’d need to pack up and move just to get it or keep it.

That being said, if I were offered a job in Austin, I’d consider it, mostly because it’s closer to my folks and where the inlaws live, and a technology hotbed in its own right.

They were both heavily involved in this decision and we presented multiple options for how to handle the move during school (especially for my son who is already in high school). If you are interested you can PM me and I can let you know what we discussed. My son is totally nonplussed by the move; my daughter is more wary but generally excited.

I think you handled the situation well. 🙂

I meant children. You could have choosen other, too. It’s interesting to see how your family, in this case adults, not moving with you affects your choice.

I’m sorry to hear that. Hopefully, something will change or come up faster than you think. When the economy improves, I’m sure you’ll have an easier time find work in a new location.

> I said no, however as much as I like my area I could be tempted away to a few others ( Portland or Seattle for example ). The big issue is that at this point I couldn’t easily shed my CA mortgage, so I’m sort of stuck. Which is fine as I do love the area and I probably couldn’t make more anywhere else.

I really want to buy a house, but I’m single. This (I don’t live in CA, though) is the only thing keeping me from doing so. I feel without a spouse or children, it’s just limiting my options. Not that I foresee myself leaving the state/country (or this job) any time soon, but I’ve been known to job hop and I don’t see this as the job I retire from.

What a great answer. 🙂

I would never go to a really really huge city - like NYC, LA, Chicago, etc. Likewise I’d never want to go to a town smaller than 100k people - with a few exceptions made for college towns. We’re young, though. I wouldn’t want to move kids past the 5th grade.

May I ask what you like about San Francisco? I’m a member of another online community and it seems people either love it or hate.

I think kids are pretty resilient. Before I went to college my family moved . . . honestly I can’t remember how many times. To be fair not all of those moves affected my school life. The big moves were: once when I was 6, again when I was 8, then again when I was 13 (this was the move from the US to Korea). It was difficult to adjust, especially the last move, but I survived.

On the flip side of things, I think our last move had a huge impact on my brother, and I don’t think he really recovered until quite recently (at the age of 25).

I was born here, as was my father, his father and his father before him. Only that one grandparent was born here, but all four went to high school here. Except for my brother, all my family lives in the greater metropolitan area. (My brother lives 170 miles away, and that’s the closest he’s been in 7 years.) I have deep roots here. I’ve spent the better part of my 32 years here.

OTOH, I am single with no kids. I am looking for work. I’ve not travelled much in my life and I’d like to see the world. I don’t have a college degree, so I don’t really have a career. I could get a crappy job anywhere in the US, at least.

Maybe a change of scene is exactly what I need. I find it deathly frightening moving away from everything I know, though. I don’t drive and have literally $1 to my name, so I couldn’t move right now.

Yes. Every one of the million and a half people who live in Maine have a personal relationship with Stephen King. We take turns on who gets to hang with him on Friday nights.

Dude - you got Fridays? I’m so sorry. Everyone knows that the best parties were on Saturdays.

I’d like to eat high quality seasonal produce all year long. I like the restaurant scene. I like the weather. I like the true walkability of the whole area - NYC is more walkable but the air (like in LA) is like sucking up cigarettes daily, so walkability + air quality.

I like Palo Alto quite a bit.

Of course the price of housing is truly disastrous so unless we hit the lottery I’d never live there. California taxes are hilarious. We _could_ afford to live there in a few years but we’d have to make lots of sacrifices to do so - probably couldn’t send our (future, theoretical) kids to a private school, would have a small 2/2 condo instead of a large 4/3 home where we are now, couldn’t have a small vacation cottage, would be far from family, etc.

Doesn’t everyone on here have a family? Unless they congealed out of some swamp, lol.

I don’t like working to begin with, but when I eventually get the J-word down pact, I don’t want to be away from friends, relatives, the place I play squash, or my favorite bars and hangouts. I also don’t like to travel to far away places on vacation, either, so there’s no pioneer spirit in me whatsoever!
