Would you recommend Maui for a winter holiday?

I agree with this. We did the road to Hana and found it a bit on the dangerous side (some of those Maui Wowie vendors are driving impaired, obviously having sampled their own wares), very tiring, and - dare I say it - monotonous? Now, admittedly our home is on the Big Island() so we have a lot more familiarity with the type of scenery it offers than would someone from Maryland or Wisconsin. But while we liked Maui overall, the road to Hana was hardly a highlight. The Hamakua Coast of the Big Island offers similar fare on a wider, easier-to-drive, less motion-sickness-making road.

) Our home is there, we are not, hence the odd construction. But we visit home whenever we can.

GO TO MAUI! We have been many times and always see something new and exciting. Buoy won’t find a prettier or more interesting place on earth! We love the variety of activities. We can sit on the beach in the morning and hike in a rain forest after lunch!

Also don’t listen to the baloney that Maui is full of traffic jams. Hogwash! Go and see it for yourself!

Yeah, we haven’t spent that much time on Maui, but I can’t recall any traffic jams. Maybe we just lucked out with timing?

I’ve been to Maui four times and can recall one traffic jam trying to get through Lahaina during rush hour.

But would I avoid Maui because of the traffic? Heck, no.

If you want to avoid traffic jams, you’d best write Bangkok and Jakarta off your list.

Go to Maui.

While I’ve only been to Oahu, and as a teenager, long have I been [del]nagged[/del] gently chided that as a poor groom, I couldn’t manage to [del]max out the credit cards & mortgage our future for a 2 week drinking binge & a nasty sun-burn[/del] provide honey-moon trip to Hawaii for my blushing bride.

Its rather a shame that she had to make due with a house instead in hind-sight.

Hmmm. I may have spoken too soon, having plumb forgot about the seven or so bomb blasts in Bangkok these past three months. One dead and more than 30 injured. And three unexploded bombs were discovered Wednesday night alone at various locations around the city. Plus the Sunday after next, the 19th, is the fourth anniversary of the military coup that kicked out that fuckwad Thaksin, and the government is warning about expected violence.

But the bombs were (largely) aimed at specific political targets, and it really does feel back to normal day to day. And the Northern Hemisphere winter months should be quiet anyway.

Update: we booked two weeks in the Maldives yesterday! All-inclusive, in a water villa so I can just step straight into the sea!

I can hardly wait! Just have to hope Crusoe will be able to relax and enjoy doing nothing but sunbathe, snorkel and swim for a fortnight…

Good for you, and hope you have a great trip there!

I was going to chime in, but say that Maui was the most boring place I have ever had the misfortune of visiting and would not go back at gunpoint.
Honolulu, on the other hand, was great! Beaches all over the island (some busy, some almost private) but also other things to do - just like in any city.
Maui was beach, (not particularly wide beaches) and lots of over-priced, crappy souvenir shops and mediocre, over-priced restaurants.
I suppose if you have a really stressful life and just want to lay on the (narrow) beach and read a book and swim all day, well - go to Maui.
But I can do the beach for about an hour - max - per day and then want to roam around, hit cafes and bars and restaurants, see a museum or show, have some nightlife - and Honolulu was perfect for me!
One more miserable day on Maui and I too would have drawn a face on a volleyball and started a relationship with it.

Have fun, and don’t comment on the government

Blimey, didn’t know any of that.
