> Let’s bear in mind she didn’t say she’d be getting a boob job so she could have larger breasts, it was so she could have more youthful-looking ones. My assumption at that point was to make them less saggy rather than larger, and that in general she’d be going for subtle restorative surgeries rather than obvious augmentative ones.

AFAAPSHTD (as far as a plastic surgeon has told me), it’s near impossible to simply do a breast lift past a certain age, and it won’t last. Most docs will recommend implants.

If someone gets a breast lift, or a tummy tuck after a bunch of babies or losing a lot of weight, I can totally relate to that, and wouldn’t think less of them at all.
But if someone I know just wanted a new set of perky boobs, I would probably die of laughter! I just can’t see the point if it is only for trying to look younger.
If you are stepping on your current breasts, when you walk, or rolling over on them in bed every night, sure get them fixed, if you can afford it. I probably would too.

It depends on how good of a job their surgeon did.

Other than the most subtle jobs most implants are pretty obvious (to other women) and whether they tell you to your face or not, most women judge obvious implants as implants = desperate/pathetic. There are urban places in the US where implants are so common this is not the case but they are the exception.

No. What someone else chooses to do to enhance their body and feel better about themselves doesn’t really bother me. I’ve known incredibly stupid, ditzy, shallow people who don’t have a lick of plastic surgery, and I know plenty of bright, intelligent, ambitious, warm, and sincere people who have had plastic surgery or other body modifications. What makes me think more or less about someone is what comes out of their mouth, not what goes into their bra.

Okay, a couple of comments here.

1. Regarding the danger issue, would you also think equally less of someone who is of a healthy weight, wants to lose some weight just to look hotter, and takes a weight loss drug that is of questionable safety? Think something like hoodia. What about someone who used Acutane for severe acne?

2. As far as “who you do it for”: Okay, so let’s say a woman gets breast implants “for herself,” because she likes feel attractive. I resolve that this good feeling that comes from looking more attractive is still based fundamentally in other people’s opinions. Society has deemed that large breasts are attractive. Thus, someone who feels good because they feel attractive because they have large breasts still is basically feeling good because they are attractive _to other people_. Therefore, I think that any arguments about doing something that makes you more attractive “for yourself” really ultimately is for the approval of other people. Particularly in this case, women are trying to be more attractive to men.

It’s possible that I may think less of a person who had a boob job, but I couldn’t say definitely unless I knew of the person’s situation.

As for botox, I would be more understanding. I think the majority of people who get botox probably look better with it. It’s only the overdone jobs that get people’s attention, hence the bad rap. Besides it’s less invasive, temporary, and less noticeable if not overdone.

When I get older I may get botox for just my forehead if by then a better solution isn’t invented.

Right. Unless you’re an exotic dancer, getting huge super-firm breasts is a little silly.

But recovering what you once had? No problem, in fact it’d rather hot if done right.

I don’t understand botox for foreheads. Foreheads don’t wrinkle all that much and forehead skin doesn’t sag.

I would suggest a woman is better served by getting into shape if they’re not already. More healthy, more stamina, tighter body. 🙂

> So, I was pondering how I would maintain a youthful look as I approach my late 30s/40s

Don’t smoke, don’t get too much sun, don’t get a frumpy matronly hair-do, and have good genes.

To me, women who have had plastic surgery to try to look younger very often don’t look younger, they just look like they’re made out of plastic. Which I find creepy and unattractive.

Yes, I probably would think less of someone if they had a boob job. But it doesn’t matter what I, a stranger on the internet, think. What matters is (1) what you think, (2) what any present or future husband or SO you have (who might get to play with your boobs) thinks, and (3) what the people close to you whose opinion you value think.

I would not think less of someone who had a boob job. I’ve had a breast reduction, myself. It made me very happy and continues to make me very happy.

(Here’s a secret: when they reduce your breasts, they lift them, too)

Doesn’t seem any different than wearing makeup. I suppose the difference would be if you’re good looking and all you lack is nice breasts, and if you can afford it, why not fix it? There’s no cure for ugly.

But then again, if you think that much of yourself, where do you stop?

Assuming you don’t go up more than one cup size, go for it. You’ll hear all sorts of nonsense about how we (men) don’t like fake boobs but it isn’t true; we just don’t (usually) like fake boobs better.

I think less of them if they
a) have outstanding debt and could be using that money better
b) get them with the purpose of garnering male attention or distract from the fact that they’re no longer fresh-faced debs
c) get obnoxiously huge ones that make the air whoosh out of your lungs when you hug them (they’re pretty hard, in my experience)
d) Attend funerals and school functions with the girls always on display. Time and place, ladies.

I think if mine sagged I’d like to restore them somewhat, but I’m honestly scared of putting stuff in. I know granola-loving CA girls who won’t eat anything that contains hydrogenated oil, but got silicone in their A’s to turn them into D’s.

I can’t say that I understand why, though, any more so than applying make-up or coloring one’s hair. Is it the relative danger of cosmetic surgery as opposed to other beauty-enhancing techniques? The cost? What?

Boob jobs look hideous. You know, a woman lying on her back, with breasts still defying gravity like balloons buried under the skin? Also, I have a warm relationship to human breasts - I want to cuddle them, kiss them, caress them. Boob jobs not only look but feel artificial, not the way breasts should feel. The thought of caressing a plastic bag is not sexy. I take an A-cup natural any day over a boob job.
