Oh my!! What a sweeping generalization and vast stereotyping. No, I’m not peroxided. The “girls” ARE huge, but real. And I waitressed, but the money went to college. I’m a project manager for a Gov’t agency Environmental company, we make the “bad sh\*t” go away. My “muscle man” has two consecutive bachelors degrees, one in Computer Science, one in Business, and is one of the top 3 IT men in town. He has a fulltime job as such AND is much sought after for freelance IT work. He’s a mopar fan though (sigh, well not everyone is perfect,lol), but has HUGE biceps!!! (probably half again the size of my thighs), and a chest a city block wide. Just because a man is big and muscle-bound, and likes the classics does not mean that that type of man falls under your ridiculous stereotype. ---

Maybe that particular stereotype didn’t apply to you but here are the most often seen fanatics of domestic “muscle cars” : 1. Patriotic shitheads. Characterized by chanting slogans such as “never forget!” and “let’s roll” while also displaying trendy american flags post 9/11. Except they show utter disrespect towards all other people and cultures of the world. Usually closet racists with agendas. Reasons for driving muscle cars: It’s part of their agenda and they refuse to patronize those “foreigner japs who take our jobs blah blah blah \_insert random unsubstantiated racial bigotry” Type of male seen driving: Usually middle aged white male bigot. 2. Meatheads. Characterized by their overwhelming desire to drive loud and big cars. Because in their simpleton minds big and loud is good cuz good makes Lothar the neanderthal look cool. Usually drives the most gaudy piece of shit car as long as it has an engine that wakes up the block with its rumbling. Reasons for driving muscle cars: It’s loud and big durrr so it be good for lothar. Type of male seen driving: Meathead idiot. 3. College boy. Drives mustangs exclusively and tacks on various parts. It’s basically the domestic vehicle lobby against the “rice rocket” and other import cars. Just as tacky as the idiots who slap on huge wings on the back of honda civics except they do it on mustangs. excessive molding and stupid race slogans adorn their windshields. Reasons for driving: MUSTANG IS COOL LOOKING AND THAT’S ALL DADDY WOULD BY MY RICH SPOILED ASS. Type of male seen driving: white male in his early 20s. ---

The thread was in control… Then it started losing it. Then they blow the shift moving into the hairpin, and the whole freaking trainwreck goes off the road into the ditch. You guys are proving my point that a little tolerance goes a long way. Scratch the surface of these idiotic car wars, and what do you find? Racism and sneering elitism. Yay team. And if you think the little cars aren’t safe you need to go look at the crash test data. Size isn’t always everything. A WRX has an integral roll frame, a U-shaped protective frame around the cabin, front and side curtain airbags, and a bunch of other safety features. My 1967 Camaro had lap belts, a steel dash, a glove box door of steel that would flop open in an impact and become a knife at kneecap level (same for ignition key). But more importantly, the safer car is the one that will keep you from having the accident in the first place. My old Camaro was terrifying on slick roads. I spun it out more than once. Rear wheel drive and big power are not that easy to work with on ice and snow. A WRX loves slick roads. It stays perfectly poised all the time because the AWD shifts power to the front and back as needed when the wheels slip. They race them on snow and ice for fun. I don’t even own one of these things yet, but I’m starting to see the light. I live where there is snow on the ground usually six months of the year. And every accident I’ve ever been in involved snow and ice. An AWD sports car simply makes sense if you live where road conditions get bad. ---

The majority of Japanese cars sold here are, AFAIK, made in Mexico and right here in the US. Japan vs. US as a business fight is just stupid. We’re so interconnected it’s almost scary. And, while there are always examples of sterotypes that make it real easy to point and say “look! see! I’m right!” the fact is, at least on this board, none of them fit. Or at least damn few. Japanese cars are good cars. American cars are good cars. Comparing a 1969 Camaro, or 442 or Chevelle to a Integra Type R or a Skyline or a Civic is like comparing apples and cats. We’re all car people. If you scratch us deep enough, it’s all about the “zoom” of going fast, and the fun of getting greasy tinkering with your engine. I love Civics and Integras. I love older Camaros and Mustangs. They aren’t even the same beast, IMHO, but I love them for the same things… the looks, the feel and the “zoom”. 40 years ago, I’m sure people were bitching that these kids with their hot rods can’t appreciate their cars like they could their old cars from the 30’s. Can’t we all just get along? ---

I’m not too thrilled with the Mini Cooper S. (S. Cooper is the standard. S is the fast one) It’s a wonderful, great car except for two glaring flaws. First, the speedo is in the CENTER of the DASH. Idiot. Second, it’s a bit too small for me. The trunk with the rear seat down looks about the size of the trunk of my Beetle with the rear seat up. And speaking as someone who moves stuff around a lot, it’s just not big enough. As far as torque, though, you’d be surprised. The Focus SVT makes 140 lb-ft at 2000 RPM, going to 145 by 4,000. The truth of the matter is, it’s not the car you have, it’s what you do with it. I’m not taking the Bug to a drag strip. I’m rallying with it. And I don’t think a Grand National could do what it does, without losing half its bodypanels in your average race. ---
