Back in the day I was really into whitewater kayaking. I was a member of a paddling club that traveled to W. VA. quite a bit. Our club anthem was “Take Me Home, Country Roads”. I’ve heard that song performed a million times in a lot of styles but that’s a new one. ---

A few days ago I discovered the apparently new music genre ‘Bardcore’ on YouTube. Essentially covers of modern songs done with instruments and lyrics from The Middle Ages. It’s worth looking at, I already have most on my Crusader Kings II playlist. ---

As a medievalist : Bardcore sucks. Basically like the dumbest of SCA filks have just hit mainstream for some inexplicable reason. Well, not actually inexplicable - just dumb. Plague isn’t a good reason for crappy mock-period shite. ---

Naah. I mean, don’t get me wrong, they’re _technically_ well-done, and she has a nice voice. But the lyrical changes to make them sound cod-medieval are as grating as turkey legs at a Renn Faire. They’re schmaltzy. Kitsch. Cheesy. Fake. ---
