My dear Mrs. Shelley,

As well you know, we have all been through a dreadfully gloomy summer. Whereas your esteemed husband and friends may feel that a gloomy story is consequently appropriate for the season, we feel that our readers would like the relief of something more cheerful and less implausible than a tale of a man-made creature ravaging the countryside. Perhaps another publisher will feel differently.
