After the attacks on September 11, were tolls still collected at the various bridges and tunnels in NYC? (Some of the bridges were used by masses of pedestrians to walk out of Manhattan, so they don’t count)

It’s been my experience that NYC collects tolls under the worst of circumstances, no matter how backed up things get. Hope I’m wrong about this one.

No tolls are ever collected leaving Manhattan. They only collect tolls for people heading in to the city. I doubt they would have collected tolls for emergency vehicles, and they were the only ones going in.

Good point. But I do know a number of people who did go into Manhattan (or at least tried to) because they feared for friends and relatives. So the question still stands.

Did the ‘number of people’ you’re referring to pay tolls?

I assume that once the bridges and tunnels were open to regular traffic they charged tolls. Is there something wrong with that?

How did they get in? All the news sources I remember seeing on the 11th stated repeatedly that all bridges and tunnels into Manhattan were closed to non-emergency vehicles.

The Midtown tunnel charges both ways, as does the Triboro Bridge. Not sure about the Battery Tunnel, I don’t believe I’ve ever gone through it. These passages are run by the MTA.

Brooklyn the Staten Island: The toll on the Narrows bridge is $7.00 outbound-Brooklyn to Staten, and free the other way.

From Long Island (Queens): The Throgs Neck and Whitestone Bridges charge both ways (Queens/Bronx).

Can’t say what the situation was on the 11th, though I wouldn’t doubt they’d be waving people through if the traffic was enough.

Thanks **postcards** , after I’d posted I realized that I really didn’t know about all the possible routes. But in general, even on normal days, they don’t want people backed up in Manhattan waiting to pay tolls, right?

BTW, what are all the bridges/tunnels to Manhattan?

Clockwise from the GWB:

Spuyten Duyvil
Broadway
University Heights
Washington (continuation of GWB)
2 I don’t know the name of
Macombs Dam
145th St
Madison Ave
3rd ave
Willis Ave
Triboro
Pedestrian bridge to wards Island
Queensboro Bridge
Queens Midtown Tunnel
Williamsburg Bridge
Manhattan Bridge
Brooklyn Bridge
Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel
Holland Tunnel
Lincoln Tunnel

I probably missed a couple plus you have ferries, subways, and the PATH.

Where does the tramway fit into the picture? Is that from Roosevelt Island?

Is this the same thing as the Henry Hudson Bridge?

I believe that the GWB extension highway connects to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge, and then to the x-bx expressway.

The Washington Bridge is right next to the Hamilton Bridge, I believe.

Just south of the Hamilton Bridge is the “High Bridge,” which lives up to its name. I believe that it was once a pedestrian bridge, but is now closed.

I think you’re right on all counts. I had a .pdf of manhattan bike ways handy so I just went by that. It wasn’t very detailed.

The tram is about 100 feet north of the Queensboro (59 Street) bridge. It launches from 2 Ave at the foot of the bridge.
