I’m watchin’ Gameday and they show an ad where the guys are playing a bean-bag toss game where the object seems to be getting the bean-bag in Corso’s mouth, and then they put up the “Corso’s Cornhole Challenge” graphic. I got news for you, ESPN. That ain’t the cornhole! 😃 The web address they put up ain’t no good, so I don’t know if this is a real thing or not. Made me laugh my ass off, however. That game is called “cornhole” in southwest Ohio, where I presume it originated. When I moved to Cincinnati several years ago and read a newspaper article joking that the Olympics needed a cornhole event, I was a little taken aback. ---

The small-town festival in a nearby village offered a Cornhole Tournament the first few years we lived out here. In recent years they’ve changed it to bean-bag tourney, so even Midwestern farmer types are hip to the snigger factor. I assume Gameday knows what kind of reaction to expect and is actually seeking it out. ---

It’s called bags in Chicago, but cornhole around DC and in rural Illinois. ---

I’ve known folks that have filled the bags with dried corn, maybe that has some relevence. “Corn Bags” lacks the gravitas of “Cornhole”. ---

It’s called Cornhole in Alabama, too. (Which is where Gameday was today.) I hadn’t really heard of it until a few years ago. Some sports bars, etc. advertise that they have Cornhole that you can play. I think there was a Cornhole tournament in town a few months ago. ---

It’s also called “Cornhole” in Cleveland and in western PA. The content of the bags (dried corn rather than beans) is in fact the origin of the name. ---

Last summer I was peacefully commuting to my job on an Air Force base in California. heading down the main drag past a big outdoor LED bulletin board where they post upcoming events. In big bold letters, here is what I read: Fun For The Whole Family Everybody Come On Down to the EXTREME CORNHOLE TOURNAMENT Prizes Awarded!.. I and carpool buddy spent the rest of the trip in an extreme state of WTF and laughing ourselves sick. I was sure somebody had played an outrageous practical joke, till I talked to a cow-orker from the Dakotas who 'splained what the word meant back in the Heartland. ---

In New England, that game doesn’t have a name AFAIK, but “cornhole” is NOT what we call it. (I think of Beavis and Butthead when I hear the word) ---

When my wife took me to Eastern Kentucky to meet some of her relatives, they asked me if I wanted to go out back for some corn hole. I politely declined. Later I found out that corn hole was just their term for anal rape\*. \*Not really, but the first sentence is true.
