I like the use of Og. He’s a good placeholder divinity for a group that has many names for God, Allah, G-D, the gods, etc. More [about](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=327649) [Og](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=313769). If you really intentended to keep it to yourself, you would not have posted, and I wouldn’t be replying. For what it is worth, inside jokes tend not to be exclusionary in intent, as I’ll assume you believe since you won’t voice your issue with them, rather they tend to be flags or badges identifying the joker as belonging to some smaller set then the group as a whole. However, this doesn’t necessarily raise them in the pecking order over non-members, it is just a membership card. I have a theory about people who allude to something, and then demur on the premise that it would not be nice to voice it out load… ---

They’re markers of identity. I called it a “pet theory” but that’s probably too strong a phrase; my _observation_ has been that people who are fond of repeating in-jokes long after they stopped being funny is that they’re sort of desperate to feel they belong to a group - that is, it’s not the people who have much going on in their lives who are _really_ into in-jokes. They’re amusing at first, but they tend to stop being so amusing after a while. ---
