I thought it was OK. I’m afraid I have never liked Apocalypse. He always seemed to me to be a knockoff of Darkseid or Thanos.

I like James McAvoy, but I miss Patrick Stewart.

Ian Mckellan always seemed a little too old for Magneto. Michael Fassbender still seems a little too young.

The encounter between Jean Grey and Wolverine served mainly to remind me of how perfect Famke Janssen was for the role.

Kodi Smit-McPhee actually fits my mental image of Nightcrawler better than Alan Cummings did. Putting him in a Michael Jackson jacket was a cute allusion to his comic-book costume.

I found Nightcrawler unpleasant to look at. In the comics he obviously looks different from a regular human, but not _ugly_.

I was just joking that (and nobody reads us but us, so don’t worry) if she read that it’d probably piss her off.

What bothered me about that is that instead of making Havok die heroically they made him go out like a god damn idiot who would have killed all the X-Men and like fifty kids if Quicksilver wasn’t there. It wouldn’t have been hard to have Apocalypse be the one that kills him and causes the explosion.

I liked it pretty well, despite the cliched villain and some confusion with the timeline.

I agree with \*\*magnusblitz \*\*that Psylocke’s costume was cringeworthy. I thought Singer was smart when he started doing these movies to stay away from spandex–what happened?

> I assume that was indeed Mystique and she figured out a way to free Wolverine then but in the 10 years between movies he was recaptured. That makes more sense to me than they taking 10 years to do what they did to him.

So Wolverine goes back in time and gets recaptured for his trouble? Why weren’t the X-Men looking for him this time?

I think too that they need to recast Logan in the future. It’s weird having him be the same actor from the original cast while everyone else is different.

> I mean geez, just look at how well _Deadpool_ did things… the Colossus we got in that movie is probably one of the best portrayals of an X-Man ever.

\*Deadpool \*is my favorite of all the superhero movies I’ve seen (narrowly edging out \*X2 \*and _The Avengers_), but this was actually one of the few things that bugged me about it. To my way of thinking, that Colossus was way too “matte”. He’s supposed to be all shiny, like polished chrome! And I didn’t think the CGI looked really real and solid–it was more of a “Roger Rabbit” effect.

Magneto’s character arc in this movie is overtired. Can we have one movie where he doesn’t feel betrayed, nearly destroys everything, and then is talked back down by Charles or Raven?

</div>

If we think of this as the 6th or 7th film, the arc is definitely overdone. But if it’s more of a reboot like Spider-Man, then it’s more like retelling the origin story.

Well, I meant character-wise. They really nailed his “wholesome gentle giant” aspects… the scene where he stops fighting Angel Dust because she’s had a wardrobe malfunction was perfect. I disagree regarding his appearance (I think it would make sense that he’d be a bit dingy, he’s clearly been around the block) but that’s neither here nor there. The only thing I thought was weird was that he’d be sitting around the X-Mansion eating cereal while armored up, but clearly that was just to save money on the actor.

That seemed weird to me, too. Are actors really that expensive? I thought some of them would literally be willing to work for cereal.

If it was just “an actor,” it’d be cheap enough to hire someone. But they need an actor who’s a really, really big guy, who can do decent voice work, and who can do it in a reasonably convincing Russian accent. That’s a pretty shallow pool.

I don’t think the problem is finding the right guy, the problem is having to cast an extra main character that may or may not have to show up in multiple movies.

From what I’ve read, it took five actors to make Colossus, with one doing motion capture, another doing facial expressions, another doing the voice, etc. The original actor politely declined the role because he wouldn’t have actually performed anything by the time they were done with him.

And it’s waaaaay easier to make a matte chrome figure than a, uh, chromed chrome one. Then you’ve got to get all kinds of mapping textures to reflect the scenes around him, and it becomes a big fake-ish looking nightmare.

This also disappoints, because other than Cyclops being upset for 30 seconds, there’s no other impact. I think it would have been better if part of the reason Havoc died is that Quicksilver was goofing around so much that he didn’t save him in time. Put the emotional impact on Quicksilver and force him to take things seriously.

Ok, I’m not subscribing to this theory, but it has been argued that the music is non-diagetic and the muffs he puts on is ear protection. It’s very weak, of course, when there’s a cable running from the device on his hip to his headphones and he appears to push a button at the start of his activities. I think the producers just didn’t give a shit and wanted to entertain the audience with cool music during the scene.

But it wasn’t his fault. Why the hell was a Death Star like, self-destructive reactor in the mansion? Havok could not have anticipated that. But your point still stands, they did made him look like an idiot. But I don’t think he’s dead…they never recovered a body (at least on-screen) even when they rebuilt the place.

Actually, that’s exactly what they did. For each of his scenes, they filmed a silver sphere moving through the set to capture how the reflection s should look , and grafted them into the CGI.
