X-Wing fighters: why the X-wing?

Voyager has moveable thingies too. I think so as to not damage subspace as much. Maybe the X-Wings has something similar going on.

Yes, you are right. Voyager has moving nacells (the thingies that have the blue on them) because it somehow made it possible to go above warp 6 and not damage subspace, which traditional nacells on ships like the Enterprise did. Which is why the Enterprise usually went warp 6 unless it was an emergency, in which case they are allowed to go their max (kinda liek a cab driver being able to break the speed limit to get the pregnant lady to the hospital on time.)

I don’t know how folding nacells make it safe, though. It makes no sense, the designers just said it looked cool and told the writers to work it in somehow.

Oh, but it’s not related to X-Wings. If you recall, ships in Star Wars go into hyperspace, which is a SHITLOAD faster than warp, but less tactically advantageos.
