She’s in one of her moods again. All this stuff about “I’ve never seen that creep before” and “restraining orders” and “chubby, hairy comic book geek” and all that, the little minx.

Merely a lighthearted joke, I assure you; given my collection of Kingston Trio albums, I’m in no position to seriously criticize the musical tastes of any carbon-based life form.

And what’s so strange about liking the Monkees? After all, they were the _Greatest Band Ever._ Did the Beatles have their own television show? Did the Traveling Wilburys have their own “Traveling Wilburymobile?” Why, no… I don’t believe they did, did they?

I’ve got a question. When Mystique infiltrates the base pretending to be Wolverine. How exactly do they realise it’s her and not Wolverine? Got distracted by someone wanting to get past me and i completely missed how they did that.

Did they realize? I thought that Stryker believed it was Wolverine but wanted him dead. He said something like, “I know my own work. Kill it.” I guess this makes more sense if he knew it wasn’t Wolverine, though.

Oh and there was one thing that rankled.

Wolverine says “Mutations are carried on the Y Chronosome”.

Uh-huh. So Rogue , Storm, Jean Grey etc. How exactly do they have powers since being women they don’t have Y chromosomes.

My impression was that Stryker immediately realized that it _wasn’t_ really Wolverine. Thus he says kill “it,” since he doesn’t know exactly what it is, not “him,” as in Wolverine.

Saw the movie last night. Am still blown away. Slowly recovering.

Wow. Just wow. It wasn’t that it was such a great movie in and of itself. But the way they take a 30+ year-old fandom and make it so new and exciting was wonderful. I loved all the little touches and the nods to fans. It was very well done. There wasn’t so much that non-fans would be annoyed, but there was more than enough for fans to jump about.

I saw the SotL homage. I was pleased. Magneto is such an infintely cooler character in the movies than he was in (most of) the comics and the cartoon series. You can feel the evil genius vibes rolling off him.

I LOVED Nightcrawler! He was always a favorite character, but his movie portrayal was fantastic. I like the way they set up his character as more-or-less “just some guy”. Sure, he’s blue and has a tail, is covered in stylistic scars and prays loudly in German at every available opportunity, but he’s very different from the other X-Men. He’s not militaristic in any way, he’s kind to others, and he seems to respond to the anti-mutant sentiment without all that hopped-up social rage. Nice counter to the others.

Cyclops is a dork. He has always been a dork. Everyone knows this and is okay with it because Cyclops is very useful and crucial to “the cause” in a way that, say, Wolverine could never be. Cyclops is everybody’s johnny-on-the-spot; he knows the plan, he does things by the book, and he’s careful. Not exciting, but good qualities for someone in charge. Wolverine is more the “run in there screaming and killing people” type, which while effective is not great for PR. It also sets up an interesting triangle with Jean. I think Cyclops represents order, stability, routine, etc., all the things many mutants are denied in their lives. Wolverine represents excitement, adventure, barely-controlled danger. Jean sort of alludes to this with her “girls flirt with bad boys, but marry good ones” line. Cyclops may be a big, boring dork, but he’s already won the race. No matter how much of a super badass Wolvie can be, he’ll never get the girl.

Now for the spoilers: I definitely saw the orange bird shape under the water. I knew exactly where they were going with Jean’s powers and the emergence of the Phoenix, so maybe I was just more focused on finding some hint of this at the end. But it seemed really apparent to me that that was not just a random wave.

I felt that Lady Deathstrike was sort of wasted. Not that she was such an important character, but I thought they might do more with her, like have her turn on Stryker and help Wolverine, revealing more about his past in the process.

I was also surprised that they killed off Sabretooth in the first movie, but then, as all comic fans know, you can’t really kill Sabretooth. Maybe he’ll pop back up in the 3rd installment. I was actually looking for him to show up at some point at Alkali Lake.

I’m also bummed that Gambit was not in the movie. Always my favorite X-Man. I’m intrigued to see how they’ll handle him if he does show up, considering the Rogue/Iceman relationship.

Now for some speculation: I really hope Emma Frost does not show up for X-Men 3. I never liked that whole storyline, but what with Jean set to become the Phoenix, I fear this may be a major plot point. I’m also wondering how they’ll deal with Rogue getting Miss Marvel’s powers, since Mystique is involved and in the movie Rogue obviously despises both her and Magneto. I wonder if Nightcrawler will return and maybe reveal more about his past and him possibly being Mystique’s son. I wondered why no one commented on this in the movie; I mean, two blue mutants, what are the odds?

anybody else wondering if maybe the files given to the president at the end of the movie hints that either he, or someone close to him, may be a mutant?
‘i don’t respond well to threats’

i was not sure, but i don’t think that he was in as bad shape during the Xavier mind-attack on normals.

anyway, that was the big discussion for my group after the movie.

That doesn’t follow, neccessarily. I believe it was Pyro that said it, and I’m not sure your wording is correct.

Because Wolverine can’t whack the bad guys from a distance? 😉

(Of course, Wolverine – and all of the other X-Men, for that matter – could easily be able to nail the bad guys from a distance, too, if they’d carry a **lousy freakin’ gun!!** )

The “mutant gene”, what does that mean? I am no expert in genetics, but that makes no sense. Mind you I am not complaining, it’s not like I need a realistic explanation, but I get the feeling Pyro was just meesing with them.

Fine Wolverine not Pyro but it still doesn’t make sense.

If the mutant gene is inherited from the Father then it has to be on the Y Chromosome otherwise either parent could be the ‘carrier’.If mutant genes are in the Y chromosome then women shouldn’t be mutants.

In the comics you are a mutant if you have “gene X”. Sure, you’re saying, one gene can make you a blue, tailed teletransporter. Tell me another. But it actually makes some sense to me. I don’t see Marvels mutants as having unique powers, I think that the only power any mutant has ever had is the one to alter reality.

Let’s use archangel as an example. He has the X-gene. If the only thing that did was give him wings how could he fly? Where they big enough? Where were the muscles needed to lift him? But what happens is that in some way (subconsciously?
) he wants to be able to fly. So gene X alters reality in a way that Warren can fly and has pretty wings that do it for him. To me at least that explains how varied and shifting any single mutant’s powers can be.

What Pyro said in the movie was that it was the males that actually carried the X-gene over the generations. An X-positive woman would be a mutant but unless the father was also the offspring wouldn’t.

re: Cyclops not living up to being the leader of the x-men …

Is he?

In the movie, that is. My impression, frankly, is that he’s way too young to fill out that role just yet. Seems to me that both Storm and Jean are older and hold positions of greater responsibility within the team.

Of course, now that Jean’s dead, we can expect Scott to step forward a bit more.

Plus, I think we’re kind of seeing the x-men in their infancy here. (There’s only three of them, plus Xavier–and pseudo-X-man Wolverine–after all … all the rest aren’t out of school yet.) I’d wait on Cyclops yet.

… isn’t it kind of like anything else that is passed down from one side of the family, like say “red hair” or something? For example, can’t red hair be carried by the father’s chromosome, but then be passed on to children of both sexes?

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t quite understand your confusion on this. Anything that is ever passed on from one parent can usually be passed on to children of either sex, right?

Is this actually solid iron? I assumed it was in some compound and thus not magnetic? Or can magneto affect any iron? Or any metal?

I assumed that solid iron was injected into an abdominal cavity or something, and Magneto was making a joke about ‘iron in the blood’, not that that makes perfect sense (eg. the iron came from all over the guard’s body).

MusicJuinkie,

Well that makes sense, in a very comic booky kind of way :). I mean it’s not like there is an actual explanation that makes complete sense for the X-Men, we are dealing in fantasy here, so I have no problem with it at all.
