Most folks have an understanding of physics that goes up to Newton (which is a fine place to stop - you can do a lot with Newton) - and with that paradigm, “science” is the thing that goes step by step to predict what’s going to happen. “Magic” is the thing that starts with the desired end point, and makes stuff happen to fulfill it (“I wish that guy was dead” - and an acorn falls, to startle a bird, which flies in front of a 18-wheeler, which takes the turn too wide and wipes out that guy’s car"). But more modern formulations of physics include Lagrangian approaches, which sound more like the magic formulation.

Hence said one critic:

> “For the moment we might very well call them DUNNOS (for Dark Unknown Nonreflective Nondetectable Objects Somewhere).” –Bill Bryson

The thing is when dark matter was first proposed it was thought to be almost certain that it would turn out to be one particular form of Weakly Interactive Massive Particles (WIMPs), namely heavy supersymmetric particles which were proposed for an extension of Grand Unified Theory which would link all fermion particles with all boson particles and vice-versa. The only problem is that supersymmetry is now almost completely dead as a theory- we would have detected the lightest members of this proposed class by now. So the WIMP model of dark matter has fallen back on more speculative possible particles such as axions or other such.

In my more despondent moods I sometimes propose that “dark matter” will NEVER be detected. That every testable prediction for what it might be will be tried and fail. That the anomalous movement of galaxies will remain a hole in science forever; a wizard did it.

I don’t think that’s quite what Gödel proved; AIUI, he proved that for any formal system of axiomatic logic one can, by definition of the axioms themselves, produce statements which are unprovable within that system of logic. Hence there is no such thing as a perfect self-contained system of logic.

I’m hoping it turns out that there isn’t dark matter after all, but rather the behavior that dark matter explains ends up being explained by new laws of physics we have not confirmed or even thought of yet.

Dark matter is what, 85% of all matter? It feels like we’re missing something that will become obvious after the next Einstein has their own annus mirabilis.

There appear to be a handful of songs called 1000 Miles, but none (in my estimation) is terribly well-known.

I wonder if he’s combining the Proclaimers’ 500 Miles and Rosanne Cash’s 500 Miles?

There’s a group called Tree3:

TREE(3) is a [very, very large number](https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/math/a28725/number-tree3/). If you used every atom in the universe to write down the number using “normal” math notation, you still wouldn’t come anywhere close to it.
