I got an email on monday from the head of HR, that concluded with a lovely “XXX”. I responded in kind.

Working in a call center, people often get off the line with me by saying “ok, love you!” before they realise what they have said, I almost always (knowingly, because it’s funny to me) say “Love you too, have a great day!”

I wrote a staff report and emailed it to my girlfriend. She found a couple of typos, so I forwarded her email to Ed Zotti. Then I thanked her for her help:

Unfortunately, I sent that reply to Ed, who is not my girlfriend. Here is Ed’s response:

Ended a call with my boss one day with “love you”. Fortunately, he’s also a good friend. We laughed about it and he admitted that he loved me too.

I did it once on the phone with my buddy. He’s ended all phone calls since with, “Love you, bye!” For FIVE FLIPPIN’ YEARS now!

Once, I was talking to my mom on the phone, and my girlfriend at the time thought it’d be funny to start fooling around. Needless to say, I got a little distracted. I called my mom “Babe”! I was horrified. “Gotta go, love you, bye!” :smack:

Well, perhaps. And maybe one time on the phone with the software folks in India.

I may also have meant to forward a coworkers whiny email to another coworker with a sarcastic comment of my own and hit “reply” instead of “forward”

</div>

I’m the opposite. Every since I started working in a call center, I talk to friends and family in ‘‘customer service’’ voice.

Like I’ll be on the phone with a friend talking about going to a movie this weekend, and say, ‘‘Do you have a preferred day or time to meet?’’

Or my husband will talk about his stressful duties at work and I find myself using the ‘‘professional empathy’’ – ‘‘Would you mind telling me a little bit more about your situation?’’/’‘I see. That sounds like it could be really frustrating for you.’’

Fortunately nobody else but me has noticed it so far.

Even more fun than ‘‘customer service’’ voice is ‘‘I teach English as a Second Language’’ voice. Whenever I’ve been on an ESL teaching jag, I find myself speaking to everyone in a slow and clear voice using limited vocabulary.

My boss signed off from a conference call the other day with “K love ya bye!”

In his defense, it was 10am Monday morning, and he’s a huuuuge Giants fan. I’m chalking it up to a case of the Monday-morning-stupids combined with a massive post-Superbowl hangover.

Hey, I think you’re onto something here. Phlosphr, just convince your buddy that you’re a big Giants fan and you love _everybody_ this week.

Lord knows, all the Giants fans _I_ know have been acting goofy all week! 🙂

I was chatting with a co-worker on the phone and signed off with, “Love you, bye.”

I was hoping she hadn’t noticed, but she called me back and asked me if I’d said it. I laughed…I was multi-tasking and was on auto pilot (it wasn’t a work related conversation) and I said bye the same way I say bye to my husband when he calls.

We had a good giggle. There used to be a time where I would have died of mortifiction, but hell…I’m older, and if you can’t laugh at yourself by now, you’re doing it wrong.

My dad and I used to work for the same company.

One day he picked up the phone and thought that it was an \*internal \* call that he was picking up when he said, “Hey Dickweed.”

It wasn’t.

Fortunately, it was another coworker’s dad on the phone. We were glad that he found it funny.

I’ve been on professional phone calls which ended with the other person saying “Buh bye.”

Usually it takes a couple of seconds before my brain rewinds and processes what was just said. “Buh bye?” After you just spent 10 minutes beating me up over pricing?

My SO and I used to end emails this way, until one day my spellcheck didn’t like “ya” and I totally missed it’s spelling correction. Now, it’s always “Love Yak!” I scored points when I mailed him a yak fingerpuppet, to his office.

It might have been strictly business. XXX is old-school journalist shorthand for “end of this piece.” 😛
