Hey, check it out, pics of me. Kind of disappointing that the first pictures I’ve had taken in five years were by a complete knob who doesn’t know how to use a camera, but (shrugs) we art folks can be jerks about this stuff because we know how to use cameras. Anyways, the reason this was taken is to show all the people back home my new hairstyle. The stuff on top of my head used to be about four inches longer, and stood straight up. Kind of like Kramer on Seinfeld, except that mine was fluffy and I didn’t use hair gel or a team of professional stylists. It was cut for a mullet contest here at the University. Everyone freaked out when I showed up with a godlike mullet, so they gave away free beer and pizza and took me down to get shaved in front of the entire school. (So everyone was more or less on an equal level, you see.) The prize is $1000 travel expenses, in February, plenty time for it to grow back. Okay, having seen the pics I am truly sorry for you. But you look happy, so… Anyway, you seem like the man to ask: WTF exactly is a “mullet” haircut and when did this term come about? ---

OH, AND COME ON MAN, GET A DECENT HAIRCUT. PS. ShibbOleth, are you American?? If so you should know damn well what a mullet is. 🙂 It’s a hair cut where the top and back of the head are left with long hair, and the sides are cut short/shaved. Quite sad really. ---

Ok, I’ve seen this style for years and years, but had never heard it referred to as a mullet. And in my defense I had been living outside of the USA for three years, until the beginning of last summer. I thought this might be some brilliant idea someone came up with like _Survivor, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, boy bands_ or _Brittany Spears_ while I was away. :rolleyes: ---

(No, neither have I.) The hair cut he has in that movie is a Mullet. It is typically a short hair cut, but it is shoulder length at the back. Here in Canada (and maybe in other places) it’s also called “Hockey Hair”. ---

Mullets are so revered where I’m from that our high school newspaper recently ran an article about the history of mullets and famous mullet-sporters. **ShibbOleth** , in the south we see a lot of these. -sigh- Maybe that’s your excuse. ---

I live just across the river from Kentucky, and grew up in Florida. Just never heard it called a mullet. Maybe I ran with the wrong crowds. Anybody have an idea on the etymology. Of course in Florida a mullet is a fish that swims in the shallows and brackish creeks. So if somebody said, “look at the mullet on that dude” I would be looking for a fish. ---

For those who can’t get the link to work ( **OpalCat, Zette** )… Neither could I, until I recalled seeing someone say here a few days back that if you add a “space” to the end of the link after copy/paste to the address bar, it lets you through.
