When my parents were active in the civil rights movement in our segregated town, we visited the African-Americans’ Catholic church. Among other noticeable differences, they’d taken the doughy communion wafers and fried them crisp. I think we still let them disintegrate by themselves, though. ---

Just a silly aside, but since I was a kid, I always wanted to tell the priest giving me communion “I’d rather have one with chocolate”. The wafers are just so bland for the flesh of the king of the world. ---

A few years ago at one of the foreign branches of my church in Beijing, when the Sacrament bread was passed to the congregation, one little boy picked up his piece and said, quite loudly, “Where’s the jam?” We all managed to not laugh out loud, but it was obvious from people’s faces that they really enjoyed his question. ---
