Why do they assume that it was Martians just because the probe is on Mars? Wouldn’t it make sense to assume that a Venusian craft landed in roughly the same spot, some occupants were ordered to clean the outside of their ship, they got confused because of the dark, and cleaned part of our probe before they realized what they were doing? Usually the simplest answer is the correct one and the authors of that story should have realized that. ---
