If an umpire makes a call and it is not disputed and resolved in committee, he is obligated to stick by it, even if the Jumbotron replay shows that he wasn’t even close to being right. A fine example: look up Don Denkinger in the 1985 World Series, where he made one of the lousiest calls ever. The replay for the crowd is not allowed to have any bearing on the decision. ---

Is that in the rules, or is it tradition? Lately the umpires have gotten more interested in getting the call right than sticking to their guns. I’ve seen more home runs taken back this year than I saw in my whole life before this year. Whether it’s a change in the rules or a change in tradition, I think that decision is good for the game. ---
