Dougie was close but he was just inside the corner.

Anyway, Dougie wasn’t the guy that A-Rod hit.

You mean MINTY.

At least that’s what we’ve been calling him for the last four or five years in Minnesota.

His other nickname is “Dougie Defense.”

This afternoon on NPR, they were discussing the play involving A-Rod, and whether or not it was shown on the fanavision screen. Apparently it wasn’t, and the rationale was that replays could incite misbehavior from the fans.

Despite my passion for a team, throwing shit and attempts at justification of cheating just isn’t there.

Kudos to the officials for their consensus based review of controversial plays, as I’d have felt it an undeserved run had not Jeter been returned to first.

OK. I’m not saying that the fans at the park last night were right. And, just because fans of other teams (_cough_ RedSox _cough_) have done it before us doesn’t justify it. However, don’t you think that calling out the riot police to line the field was just a BIT of an overreaction for booing and some plastic cups?

It wasn’t just plastic cups it was bottles, baseballs and batteries as well.

And don’t forget the incidents in other stadiums of Jerry Springer guests running onto the field and beating the shit out of coaches.

Perhaps not so much a **reaction** of any caliber; more like a precaution. Someone said upthread that cops were standing guard in Kenmore Square in Boston, to head off potential disgruntled Sox fans coming out of the bars. Three years ago I think it was, Laker fans trashed the Staples Center because we **won**. And there was that incident at the OSU game a while back. I’d rather see riot police doing nothing than see destruction and wonder why there weren’t any cops.

> I’d like to thank you for not saying “how many dickhead _Yankee_ fans” and acknowledging that NY isn’t the only city to suffer from this phenomena.

Well, that’s because it’s true.

Right here in Baltimore, at Camden Yards, you can’t sit through a single inning without all the morons second-guessing every ball and strike call. I’ve [ranted](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=196065) about it before.

> [@mhendo](#):
>
> So, i’m at the Orioles/Blue Jays game at Camden Yards yesterday. My girlfriend had scored a couple of good seats from someone at her work, $40 seats in an area known as the Field Box. We were in Section 58, and if you go [here](http://baltimore.orioles.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/bal/ticketing/seating_pricing.jsp) you can see where that is (click on the section and you’ll get a view of the diamond from the seats). As you can see, that section is just outside third base, and we were about 25 rows back.
>
> Now, sitting in those seats, one gets a side-on view of the pitch. If the batter is right-handed, we are looking straight at his back; if he’s batting from the left, we are looking straight at his chest. So tell me, all you whining, moaning, arm-chair umpires in my section, how the fuck can you tell when it’s a strike and when it’s a ball?
>
> We can, of course, see the height of the ball. But if the height is OK, there’s no fucking way you can tell, from 150 feet away and side-on, whether the ball painted the outside corner, or whether it was wide. Of course, we get a few hints from things such as the catcher’s position, and we can also infer some things from the batter’s actions. For example, if the batter suddenly rears backwards way from the plate, chances are that the ball was inside. But this happens rarely. And yet you parochial idiots spend the whole fucking afternoon complaining every time the umpire calls a ball on Oriole pitching, and every time he calls a strike on Toronto pitching.
>
> Now, i’m not some impartial purist who goes only to see the best possible game and doesn’t care who wins. I cheer strongly for Orioles hits, and sigh deeply when they throw away yet another game. And i was as pissed as anyone with the blown call at first base that was a major factor in yesterday’s defeat. But give me a break. You lose all credibility when you just sit there all afternoon whining about almost every pitch.
>
> That was a rather mild rant, i know, but such one-eyed, irrational fans give me the shits.

Lisa: Dad, do you know what Schadenfreude is?
Homer: No, I do not know what shaden-frawde is.
[sarcasm] Please tell me, because I’m dying to know.
Lisa: It’s a German term for `shameful joy’, taking pleasure in the suffering
of others.
Homer: Oh, come on Lisa. I’m just glad to see him fall flat on his butt!
[getting mad]
He’s usually all happy and comfortable, and surrounded by loved ones,
and it makes me feel… What’s the opposite of that shameful joy
thing of yours?
Lisa: [nastily] Sour grapes.
Homer: Boy, those Germans have a word for everything!

Agreed, but just to make my point more clear, since we’re on commercial, and we’re both on the same side of the fence on this (Go Sox!) so I’d rather not go round and round over it, but if A-Rod had put his hands out to protect himself in anticipation of a collision with Mientkiewicz (which was likely) while running straight to first base and in the process, knocked the ball out of Arroyo’s glove instead of obviously swiping at the glove, that would have been perfectly legal, and I think there still would have been a pit thread about that play\*. Perhaps not by you, but by a more rabid pro-Sox or anti-Yankee fan.

- We used to diagram sentences in Jr. High English class. This would take at least 3 panels on the blackboard, huh? 😃

> A-Rod hit a dribbler to first, with Jeter on base. Arroyo, the pitcher, picked it up and went to tag A-Rod. A-Rod slapped Arroyo’s glove, knocking the ball loose and allowing Jeter to score and A-Rod to go to second. After some discussion he was called out and Jeter was returned to first.

That’s illegal? ☹ My career childhood cul-de-sac batting average just went down by about 40 points. Loved that move.
