Long time Red Sox fan. I was at the Bucky Frigging Dent game. My favorite World Series was the Yankees vs. the Mets, because *New York * had to lose.
See, here’s the thing. True Sox fans DON’T give a shit about 1918 or the friggin’ “curse” or any of that BS. That’s the Hollywood version concocted by a bunch of people who just don’t get it and can’t comprehend team loyalty. I don’t even think I can explain it. 1978 and 1986 and 2003 ended horribly, obviously, but that doesn’t take away from how great those seasons were. You are correct, though, that once the Sox win the World Series, we won’t know what to do with ourselves.
One last thing, there are plenty of asshole fans on both sides of the fence–the Yankees hardly have the moral highground on that front.
Jeeziz…this is why I will never be a fan of any professional sports team, folks*.
Okay, suppose the fact that it’s just a game doesn’t concern you. And let’s say that you’re willing to completely overlook the fact that, oh, you’re not on the team, you had nothing to do with the team’s success, and gloating over such accomplishments is just a bit silly. And that using baseball success as a counterpoint to another city’s football success is just plain dumb. None of this bothers you at all.
Let’s not forget that baseball has NO ECONOMIC RESTRICTIONS WHATSOEVER, which means that the big-money teams can pretty much stockpile talent at will. The reason Wayne Huizenga was villified wasn’t because he “bought a championship”, it was because it was so easy. (And of course, thanks to no salary floor, he was free to utterly destroy the team immediately afterward.) And no one has more money than the Yanks. As Rick Reilly put it, if “Yankess win World Series” is a headline, than so is “bulldozer defeats tulip”.
They win four World Series with a level playing field, I’ll be impressed. Until then…'kay, whatever.
At this point, I would like to reiterate that I’m not a fan of any professional sports team. Please keep this in mind when formulating responses.
