> Yayoi Kusama, one of the world’s most celebrated and best-selling artists has died, according to a statement on the artist’s official website.

She really was one-of-a-kind.

Our AfrikaBurn art project this year was an infinity mirror room inspired by hers.

Oh, that’s sad. She had a massive exhibit at Tel Aviv Museum a few years back. I was dragged there by my wife, and was utterly spellbound.

I saw her Tate Modern exhibition as well. The mirror rooms were so popular they extended the exhibition by months to accommodate the crowds. Brilliant stuff, but such a sad life.

Very sad. We actually purchased a share of one of her works.

We have her Firefly room at the Phoenix art museum. My wife read a book by her. She found her “interesting”.

I wasn’t previously familiar with her or her work but they look very interesting.

What I am struck by is the common acceptance of her childhood onset visual phenomenon as a form of psychiatric disease. Visual phenomena like described sound much more like visual migraines than psychosis to me? I wonder if her traumatic childhood and the culture she was surrounded by made a neurological condition to be interpreted as a psychiatric one? Seeing things can make you feel crazy.

Not that it matters I guess. But not understanding why she chose to live in a psychiatric facility.

They had one of her mirror rooms as a temporary exhibit at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art a few years ago. Timed tickets were hard to come by. They gave you exactly two minutes inside the room. Still, it was an amazing experience.

I’d never heard of her before I saw an installation of hers in Korea 14 years ago. It was very “Twister meets Wonder Bread,” but it was incredible!

I didn’t recognize her name, but as soon as I saw the thumbnail in the OP, I recognized her from a Great Art Explained video I’ve seen.

I saw her massive exhibition at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne just last month. Utterly fascinating, both the work in itself and as viewed through the lens of her life story spanning a huge array of times, places, and settings. I’m looking at a tiny keychain pumpkin in my collection of trinkets right now.

She checked herself into a mental institute 50 years ago. One would assume that she was diagnosed with something at some point by actual psychiatrists.

Honestly - I find her life inspirational. She recognized she had a problem, sought treatment, and went on to live a happy, productive and fulfilling life. She was living proof that mental illnesses can be manageable. I don’t think her life was sad at all.

Neither do I. And her finding meaning in her visual perception experiences that both helped give her life purpose and joy to others is itself inspiring.

All I am saying is that if I as a general pediatrician was presented with a ten year old describing what she described I’d be going down neurological diagnoses not psychiatric, even if the child also had other psychiatric things going on. Cross off seizures and autoimmune encephalitis (by future course did not have) but working diagnosis would have been migraine aura without headache, and treated as such presuming treatment was desired.

Obviously I don’t know her whole real story. But the media presentation of the visual phenomenon as visual hallucinations from a psychiatric illness just seems unlikely to be accurate, even though it sounds like she also had other psychiatric issues, possibly stemming at least in part from a traumatic childhood.

Interesting article even if they appropriately do not guess at diagnosis:

> Yayoi Kusama’s art offers a rare and powerful window into how neurological disorders can shape visual perception. Many patients struggle to articulate phenomena, flashing lights, trailing images, and shifting shapes, as these experiences fall ...

One of my all-time favorite bands, Superchunk, found her to be sufficiently inspiring to subtitle a song in her honor way back in 2001. Maybe if I had really liked the song, I would have decided to look into what they might have seen in her. But it didn’t do much for me.
