I would suggest that the DA’s office in Washington DC consider filing criminal charges against Mr. Cheney. In both states that I have lived in there was a criminal statute prohibiting “Issuing fighting words”. In at least one of those states there was case law indicating that you could be properly convicted even if the insulted party was unlikely to actually respond with violence. Is there such a law in DC? I think that, properly phrased, this sounds like a GQ. I would certainly assert that “Go fuck yourself” falls under the category of “fighting words”. ---

**Yamirskoonir** ( where the hell did that come from, how the hell do you pronounce it) has hit the nail on the head. The sorrow, the disappointment, the irritation is that the Vice-President of the United States, the President of the United States Senate, the most prestigious debating society and old boys club in the world, could not think of anyway to deal with an elected representative of the people in a public setting and in the senate chamber, except to throw out a vulgarity that would spring to the mind of an elementary school student. This is the level of debate in this country? In an interview on our favorite network the Vice-President seemed to think his barracks room vulgarity to Senator Lahey was particularity appropriate and witty. I am not a Second Amendment fanatic but there was a time in America and Western Europe that gentlemen and commoner alike went armed and were expected to express resentment by resort to a blade if socially accepted boundaries were pushed too far. Back then folks were a little more careful about what they said lest it be the last talking they do. Maybe senators should start carrying side arms. ---

Man, I’d much prefer having little old ladies tell me to stick it up my ass than guys shooting at each other over a little “go fucketh thyself” here or there. Hollywood glorified the duel with sixguns at twenty paces, and so forth, but real gentlemanly duels were kind of pathetic. Men meet at the agreed-upon time and place, would walk some distance away from one another, wait for a referee, and, on the ref’s mark, shoot volley after volley in a most chillingly methodical and banal manner until one or both was hit. Often the loser would linger for days in excruciating pain until internal bleeding and sepsis finally claimed them, while the “winner” might suffer guilt, ignominy, reprisals, even suicide on occasion for the torment of breaking a commandment. Yeah, those were the good old days. ---
