Virginia’s capital, Richmond, is a city that is part of no county. Carson City, Nevada is a county that has no city. Juneau, Alaska is a city that is coterminous with its borough (Alaska has no counties).

As I’ve posted already in this thread, all Virginia cities are like this.

And this has nothing to do with the idea of a legislative-ruled territory like the District of Columbia.

Carson City is definately a city. If we are talking about capital cities/counties put Denver in there as well.

Carson city is another independent city like those in Virginia. From the Wiki article:

Of the forty-one independent U.S. cities,[1] thirty-eight are in Virginia, whose state constitution makes them a special case. The three exceptions are Baltimore, Maryland; St. Louis, Missouri; and Carson City, Nevada.

Another case is the Consolidated city-county, where the city IS the county. Like “The City and County of” San Francisco.

BTW, at the start of this branch, somebody was mentioning municipalities having their own police forces as opposed to the county. There’s another wrinkle here. I live in Cupertino, CA, population a bit under 60,000, and certainly it has a separate municipal government. But it does not have its own police, fire and emergency medical. It’s what’s known as a Contract City. It contracts those services from Santa Clara county. The local cops drive around in cars that say “Santa Clara County Sheriff” on them, and they are sheriff’s deputies.

Yes, but constitutionally it’s a dependency of Congress, its authority is only that devolved from and subject to abridgement by a Congress in which it has no vote (for instance, taking away control of the District’s finances) as a special construct. The point was state capitals OTOH are just municipalities like any other municipality in the state, so yes, they all are “real cities”.

Also, unless there is a second story Roger Williams did indeed row down to Newport when he was about 70 years old, but he stayed there four days debating a group of Quakers before going home.

That’s impressive on both accounts. Rowing from Providence to Newport is no small feat for a young man, and debating Quakers for just four hours would drive most people insane

Lansing, a village of a few dozen people, wasn’t really in the running. According to Lasning political tradition, it got chosen because it was halfway between Ann-Arbour and Marshall, the two main competing interests. You seldom see such a pure example of putting a capitol in the middle of nowhere.

You have to be thinking of Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids? The middle of AA and Marshall would be Jackson.

I got it from my Grandfather, who was a Lansing city councillor. But that was 50 years ago, and my Michagan geography is very poor.
