Is the nineteenth century really old-time now? Literature has a four thousand year history.

Anything older than most or all people now alive is “old-time”, as far as I’m concerned.

So you should know, B-L did not write “It was a dark and stormy.” (End of sentence.)
He went on for another several lines in the same sentence, all purply and puffed.\*

So, I stand by my original answer: “It was not B-L.”

- “It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents–except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.”

–Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, Paul Clifford (1830)
