# Yet another layoff here

Feh.
I am now in the ranks of the unemployed.
My company laid off 40% of the workforce today, including me.
Considering I was looking around for somewhere else to work anyway, this is not necessarily a bad thing.
But I’m peeved they laid me off before I could quit.
So…
Minuses:
- I didn’t get to quit on my own terms.
- I’m worried about the bills.
- The wankers wouldn’t reimburse me for some reference books I ordered last week, because I received the order after the folks in charge already knew about the layoffs. Bastards. Hell, I’ll probably keep the books anyway; they’ve got good info.
- I never got to use the free vacation day for my birthday. ☹
- I’ve had enough to drink that I can’t even think about coding a list right now. 😉
Pluses:
- I had a day’s (unofficial) notice, so I was able to get pretty much all of my files onto disks of various kinds. Although saving all of the MP3s was an impossible task, so I suppose I just have to go out and purchase all of the albums. When I’m employed again.
- The higher-ups actually learned from the last layoff and handled this one pretty professionally.
- I have highly marketable skills. 🙂
- They gave us all 4 weeks severance, with insurance benefits continuing through April. You can bet I’ll be taking advantage of that.
- They are also giving us the vacation time we didn’t use. I’ve got over two weeks of that coming.
- I’ve got a phone interview with a major player tomorrow. (Small minus: I suppose I should be sober by then.)
- I haven’t paid the $1000 tax bill yet, so I’ve got that tax money as a small cushion. I’d rather owe the government interest than owe my credit-card grantors.
- The VP in charge of my department gave me permission to keep my special-order ergonomic keyboard, which will make typing at home much more comfortable. Nobody else there was likely to use it anyway.
So, really, the worst I can say is “grumble, grumble”.
Yeah, it sucks, but I will likely end up better off in my next job.
I’ll keep ya posted on when I get another job.
In the meantime, it’s back to the margaritas. (The good stuff: Herradura and Chambord with sweet-and-sour mix over cracked ice cubes. In a big-ass A&W root beer mug. I deserve it.)

Count me in too, **jeyen**. Though nothing is official yet, we’re definitely being sold. Just have to wait for final paperwork to be signed.
Being laid off sucks. Third time this year. Get this–I got notified officially about the likely sale of the company **EXACTLY** a year to the day from the last time I got laid off!
I don’t think you need my good luck wishes, but I’m sending them anyway. Good karma and all that. 😉

My company also laid off about 45% today, my dept wasn’t hit, but a number of friends are gone. ☹

Well **Snooooopy** , we weren’t going to tell you, but if you insist on tape…
**Jeyen** , congrats on passing the phone screen and good luck with the face to face. I just emailed you about tomorrow or Monday.
Anyway, the layoff thing sucks. I got hit February 8 and finally landed a position that starts April 3rd (Yay!) so it is possible, but I had 5 or 6 interviews with companies that went through their round of layoffs and a hiring freeze within 24 hours of meeting me. I’ve also had a few offers evaporate. The result is I’m still not really going to believe I have a job until I get a paycheck.
**Rasa** , I’m sorry to hear about your job evaporating too. What will you be looking for this time around? I’ve got a very fresh list of good recruiters from my search, if it would help I could pass them along.
