The police and the FBI do have the ability to investigate and arrest any of them that are in this country though. And they are starting to do that. So are other countries.
It’s about time. The church just covers it up, threatens the kids with excommunication (and hell), and moves the freak to another parish. Or tells him to “pray his sins away”.
Enough. They should bust the creeps, and then arrest every monsignor or bishop that covered it up, on conspiracy.
I absolutely agree that any priest or bishop that is involved with child abuse or its cover-up should be handed over to the civil authorities for discipline. I am also in favor of dropping statutes of limitation for sexual crimes or their cover-ups.
It is unfortunate that the Grand Jury report seems to be focused on events prior to 2002. I have not found in the Grand Jury report any example of abuse or explicit cover-ups subsequent to the Dallas Convention (2002) during which the U.S. Bishops laid out new rules prohibiting cover-ups and demanding better reporting (and training for abuse recognition).
Have the Pennsylvania diocese cleaned up their acts since 2002? Or was there simply a cut-off point for the investigation? I would very much like to know how successful (or unsuccessful) the Dallas convention has been in stopping these activities. (There will always be abusive priests, just as there are abusive ministers, teachers, coaches, and others in positions of authority. However, I hope that institutions have gotten the word that such abuse cannot ever be tolerated or excused.)
Given the nature of some bishops, I could see some of them ignoring the Dallas conventions rules, (as they had already ignored a set of rules that were laid out less strongly in the 1980s (1988?)). However, it would also be good to know that the efforts to eliminate that behavior have had some success.
If the Catholic Church had any integrity, it would do what other institutions have done and hire outside consultants to come in and conduct an independent investigation, and then abide by the recommendations of the investigators. Penn State, for example, hired investigators. Other institutions have done the same. When a popular institution such as a school or a household name business engages in misconduct, then the enlightened ones realize that there exists a crisis of credibility. The only way to repair that credibility is to have transparency, which necessarily comes from having an independent investigator come in and conduct a full-on examination.
That is the only way that the Catholic Church can have credibility. Anything short of that, and they should be boycotted. If I were a parishioner, I would demand nothing less.
I think surprise FBI raids on bishops’ offices and files are exactly the right way to proceed. I think loud knocks on the church door during Mass, and police entering with cuffs ready for the priest, is a reasonable response to this shit.
Sexual abuse is rampant in Hassidic communities, and all the same tactics (gaslighting, coverups, moving offenders around, witness intimidation, and shunning) are used to suppress it.
None of this comes as a surprise. For many years I have lived in Orange County New York in the village of Monroe. I live on a street that is one of several that leads directly into the ultra-orthodox village of Kiryas Joel.
If anyone dares to question something being done in the village they are called a Nazi.
If it dangerous and substandard and illegally built housing catches fire and someone tries to investigate, they are called a Nazi.
If a local reporter does a story verifying the fact that thousands of people living there also have an address in Brooklyn and collect welfare checks from both counties they are called a Nazi.
If someone witnessing a clearly abused woman with bruises all over her face and arms and tries to do something about it they are called a Nazi.
They control government officials on the state county and local level and bring in thousands of voters who live in Brooklyn but have been registered in Monroe to vote as a block and force their own political agendas.
I realize it’s better late than never, but these folks seem to be acting like they never heard of this issue before.
And of course, the line that withholding the donation is withholding from someone in need makes me think "Good reason not to make caring for those in need reliant on charitable donations.
It’s also grimly funny that some RCC organizations object to telling insurance companies that they don’t offer contraceptives because that would make them complicit in that terrible sin, but it’s okay to pay money to cover up the rape of children.
To be honest, that’s one of my snark retorts, fashioned to fit the mind of most True Believers out there. So far as proof is concerned, it isn’t, but another data point to be weighed.
But this isn’t just “some” people “some” evil thing. These are people fairly high up in one of His biggest fan clubs inflicting harm on innocent people – also members of the club. Further, other higher up members are okay with this, coming up with the oddest rationalizations to keep the perpetrators out of the hands or the authorities – or at least not shunting them to a place where they can do no further harm.
I’m just a dumb human and and certainly not privy to know God’s Plan for this world. Perhaps the torment of these children and the escape from justice of their tormentors is preventing an even greater evil from happening somewhere or even (gasp) causing some great boon to happen. I don’t know; you tell me.
But it better be damn good and have a clear link to the evil for me to consider it. Otherwise I’ll just keep my opinion that even if there were such a god, he is not one I could worship.
Apparently in Ireland, where most of the schools are run by the Catholic Church, those that are baptized have been getting priority when it comes to school placement. 90% of the primary schools are Catholic, and while all are supposedly welcome, those that aren’t of the church have to wait at the back of the school bus for their chance to enroll to get an education, causing non-Catholic parents to baptize their children in hope of getting their children in.
That doesn’t sound like extortion. That sounds like prioritizing members over non-members. If there aren’t enough non-denominational schools, seems like Ireland should prioritize that.
I did and the thrust of the article was, to me, that the state has not offered sufficient slots in non-denominational schools. For me, the state is to blame for not serving all of its citizens.
ETA: To be clear, if there aren’t enough slots, there will be some way of choosing who gets in. None of those methods will be actually fair. The remedy must be to make more slots available.
Sorry dude, I think you’re lying through your teeth to make a point rather than saying something that really happened. It was cold so many over the top, hysterical stories over the decades that honestly, I don’t believe a word you say anymore. I believe you said your nephew was raped by a group of secret Mason types. I think you’re the one who said that there was constant Nazi activity in Germany and nobody could walk down the street . I know you’re the one who claimed that [URL="https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=355044Colin Farrell “child molested “a 17-year-old girl by kissing her in a movie where the actress was playing a young girl – a scecenever actually having happen by the way. So…
So…while I believe we should almost always give the benefit of the doubt to people claiming they are survivors of molestation and child rape, I think you in particular are full of shit.
