I think he was also involved in [computer science](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=80749) at some point. Apparently, he also has spent time [helping handicapped people](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=76329). There’s also the time he’s spent working with [petrochemical prospectors](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=70095) with the US Geologic Survey. In any event, he’s not someone I look to for accurate information on any subject, as his information often only cites his own personal experiences, which seem to run contrary to accepted truths. Plus, he generally acts like an asshole every time he puts a finger to a keyboard. ---

No, I never said I was a Japanese language instructor, I said I have a degree in Japanese linquistics. I never said I was a screenwriter, I said I was a script doctor. Yes indeed, I worked in graphic arts at one of the top prepress shops in LA, I knew lots of people… My assertion about the origin of TF isn’t any “willful mistruth.” These guys exist, I know them, they’re some of the most famous comic artists in the US, names you would immediately recognize, and they’re terrified of stalkers since they’ve had troubles with demented fans in the past. If the public knew they were involved with TF, they’d have even more weirdos knocking on their door than they do already. They created TF as freelancers (like a gazillion projects they always have on their drawing board) and pitched the idea all over LA, long before Hasbro got the bug to do TF. That’s how they got tapped by Hasbro and Marvel to do the gig. They didn’t want credit, they just wanted the money. I am perfectly content to know what I know, and let you know that I know it, without providing any proof whatsoever. In fact, I am rolling on the floor laughing at people who take such a moronic comic as Transformers so seriously they’d start a pit thread. Its a fucking KIDDIE CARTOON ferchrissakes, it’s not the Bible. Go ahead and believe what you believe, I don’t really care. I am just letting you know that in the entertainment industry, things are not always as they seem. ---

But you could prove it, without revealing identities in any way–if what you are saying is true. Just pop on over to the Warren Ellis forum, where Ellis and a number of other big names in comics frequent–and in fact reply to questions and general jibber-jabber–and ask them if they know these guys. If they’re such big names, they will know them (possibly personally as well as professionally). They have some credibility (with me, at least); if you can link to a reply saying “yeah, I know those two old guys; always hushing us up anytime we bring up how they really created Transformers”, you show some proof. But backing up a claim, well that’d just be _crazy._ ---

Not to mention Shooter and O’Niel going along with it - Plagerism isn’t a good thing to put in your portfolio. There’s an old saying ‘three people can keep a secret if two of them are dead.’ How well would this one have been kept with all the dozens of people involved? If it were true, Transfans would be debating the existance of your chimeric friends in all forums in which they meet - online and off. (The concensus might very well still be with the Hasbro/Shooter/O’Niel sequence, but people like the organizers of Botcon, or rjung would at least have heard it before now.) ---

Chas, this just doesn’t make any sense. On one hand, you are saying that your “hermits” want to stay unknown, and don’t want the supposed acclaim that would pour forth if the outside world found out that _they_ created the _Transformers_(yeah, that would sure rock the comic world!). On the other hand, you claim that they are already acclaimed comic book artists whose names we would recognize immediately, which means that they _must_ have worked on comics more famous than _Transformers_. This would be the equivilant of Thomas Edison hiding the fact that he invented the toothpick, for fear of the mobs that would hound him day and night with hearty cheers of gratitude. ---

Chas.E, contrary to what many here are saying, IMO you seem like a decent guy a lot of the time, and except when you are speaking “from authority” in an area where it seems you may not actually be an authority, you can be a quite personable felllow. Amazingly, I happen to have _first-hand knowledge_ of who the real shooter is in the JFK assassination. Despite all contrary evidence, it was actually a famous serial killer now on death row. It was only through shrewd investigation and utilizing my advanced degrees in transorbital electro-proctology that I uncovered the real killer, who _personally_ confessed to committing the crime. As this slime is already facing the chair for a number of heinous crimes and the JFK is a mere footnote in his infamous career (it was, after all, only a contract killing), I see no reason to give him more credit than he deserves. What’s that? You want proof? I see no reason to soil my hands educating such an unworthy crowd. My incalculable mental resources can be better spent on a host of unfathomable problems than to be bothered with such prosaic concepts of “evidence”. Why, in the time it would take to explain it all to infinitesimal maggots like yourself I could have discovered a unified field theory, or the cure for cancer! My superior knowledge and experience is all the proof needed for you buffoons. In fact, it gives me great pleasure in letting you know that I alone know the truth, and I’ll be sure to constantly lord this fact over you whenever the subject arises. ---

And I did want to reply, but was prevented from doing so. FYI, I have two degrees, a BFA in art (major concentrations in Photography and Painting/Drawing) and a BA in Japanese Language. I did them at the same time, graduating in 96, I was stupid and should have done a BFA and an MA. Yes, I started school as an Honors Chemistry major but switched to CompSci and then Art. And none of that is particularly relevant to this discussion. But you asked, so there it is. And gobear, particle accelerators are huge, there is a lot of free space, they used it for grad student study space when it wasn’t running.
