I have, in fact, read the entire thread, and I don’t think anyone’s addressed this specific point, and personally I think it’s an important one. The people in this thread who have recommended that you mprove your writing are not saying that you should learn to be witty, or a master stylist. They are telling you that you need to learn to be clear, readable, and understandable. You aren’t being criticized for lack of virtuousity. Your posts are difficult to read–the sentences wander all over. With your long posts, it’s hard to figure out just where your stream-of-consciousness logorrhea is going. Reading your OPs makes my eyes cross and my brain freeze up. You need to work on the conciseness and clarity of your presentation of ideas. I think you’ll find that much of the hostility you’re experiencing will disappear if you just organize your writing so that it communicates your message clearly. When people pick on typos or grammar errors, they’re not trying to derail the argument, they’re pointing out (with varying effectiveness, I’ll admit) that your lack of attention to basic writing skills makes your posts hard to read. Once you get things expressed readably and clearly, _then_ you can worry about whether or not you want to go all stylistically pretentious. It’s true, some of the writing here can get a bit high-flown, especially in the Pit. But that’s not required, and not what people here are requiring of you. It’s totally optional. But you know, take an interest in the actual construction of sentences, and you might just begin to perceive some of the joys of “excellent English wielded in a pretentious way.” Which, by the way, never goes out of style.
