I have been creeped out by this song ever since John Travolta sang it in the movie **Primary Colors**. Lately I’ve heard it enough on the **O, Brother** soundtrack that the creepiness is starting to wear off. When I was little, the only verses we knew were the first one and the “When I awoke dear, I was mistaken” verse, so it never seemed creepy, just sad. ---

Those are the only two verses I knew of before the movie came out (great soundtrack, BTW - won the Oscar that year, IIRC). My mom sometimes used to sing the song as a bedtime song for my sisters and I. I have very pleasant memories associated with it, and have sung it for my boys, too. ---

Brian Wilson singing this song on _Smile_ (the second half of track number 5) doesn’t make it sound any less like a stalker song. ---
