I knew this thread was missing something. Now it has reached maximum stupidity. And with the addition of tampon prices no less.

Hey, you get an unexpected period start-up during the school day and see if you can do better. (No, I didn’t always have extras in my locker; I was a heavy bleeder and usually ran through any stash before I thought to replenish it.)

> Apparently it’s rocket science to you. Look at it this way - if your dog has space to potty and do a bit of running around, but the high point of his day is when you talk him for a walk in the same old neighborhood, who is it that is neglecting his dog? There is no way that a dog that is mentally and physically stimulated in other ways needs a walk, much less daily, unless that is the only way it can eliminate.

It’s official. You’re a fucking idiot. Dogs don’t need walks so that they can appreciate their surroundings; they need walks so they can be a part of the pack, so they can follow, so you can lead. Just letting them run around in the back yard until they shit on the bush is boredom defined. It’s a goddamned miracle your dogs have mauled you to death yet … even if they’re chihuahuas.

Ewwww.

I’d like to add one more point to further establish **curlcoat** s stupidity (not that it needs any more support). In her crazy post, she said:

> [@curlcoat](#):

Nobody else in this thread has mentioned furbabies or pet parents, except for her - and she brought it up twice for some reason. You know who does see her pets as babies and herself as a parent? _ **Papsett** _:

Way to insult the OP that you’re trying to support, there. That’s what happens when you don’t look at links and don’t read the thread and just wade in with both guns blazing. And somehow she thinks \*we \*are the ones jumping to conclusions.

I don’t know why I’m so interested in this topic, as I’m not a dog person, but…

Jack Batty, does the fact that they are pack animals mean they really \*need \*to walk every day? I mean, hunting dogs don’t have to hunt, right?

If dogs are being excercised and stimulated in other ways, and have a large yard, isn’t that ok?

The short answer: it depends on the dog.

The long answer: I’ve had many-a-dog in my life and some are 100% ok sprawling on the couch all day, doddling out to take a whiz, and doddling back in to their air conditioned bed. I’d say that was mostly our great danes- they’d play crazy for about 10 minutes a day (a scary 10 minutes with tails, ears and slobber flying every which direction), but the rest of their time was spent curled up sleeping by your feet. Sure, they loved a nice walk, but it wasn’t anything absolutely necessary, just a fun thing we could do.

Then there’s my dog now, Mia. Mia will literally eat the walls if she doesn’t get a walk (I’ve got photographic proof). Ok, missing one walk wont lead to my dog going ape shit, but if a week or so goes by without regular walks, she starts to get more jumpy, more. . .rude. That’s a good way to describe it, she loses her manners. Before long, she’ll start being destructive- usually starting with her toys, then my shit (including my walls). It took me a while of having her to realize that it was the walks that were keeping her from going batshit. So, for dogs like Mia, walking a lot is really good for them- like meds for a kid with ADD, the walks keep her focused. We walk twice a day, for about an hour to an hour and a half, depending. For her, there really is a direct correlation between her attitude, her actions, and her walks.

Some dogs are like my danes, some dogs are like Mia. **Papsett** is saying her dogs are acting out, so it’s logical to suggest giving them something to do- like a walk. They’re bored.

You’ve hit the nail on the head with ‘stimulated.’ Running in circles by himself in the back yard is not stimulation. It’s just repetition, borderline obsession.

Excercise in whatever form is always good, but if it’s just, “get int the back yard for ten minutes while mommy watches her stories,” it’s just wasted time. The discipline of a walk, where he follows the way you want him to follow, will make a well trained dog.

Exactly - if \*\*curlcoat \*\*had come in and said some dogs are an exception and don’t need walks for whatever reason, I for one would not have disputed that. But not only did she completely ignore the facts in **Papsett** s case (ie, behavioural issues likely caused by boredom), she also went so far as to say \*any \*dog thrown into the yard for a few hours a day absolutely does not need walking:

> [@curlcoat](#):
>
> what make you think dogs that have a yard need walks??

> [@curlcoat](#):
>
> Dogs don’t need to be walked unless they don’t have a yard to do their business in, because the only benefit they get on the average walk on leash is the opportunity to crap in someone else’s yard, plus maybe some fresh air and maybe a change of scenery..

Note no mention of stimulation or any other purpose to walking than pooping (socialization, pack formation, etc). Admittedly she brings up her dog show activity as an afterthought, but these were made as blanket statements applicable to all dogs. This to me doesn’t sound like a dog expert talking - it sounds like a lazy owner talking out their ass.

Anyways, it’s pretty clear she just wants to raise ire because she showed up with all kinds of inflammatory language without even reading anything. She’s not very good at it, but she’s proved in the past that she has all the mental prowess of a box of rocks, so I guess we shouldn’t be surprised.

Perhaps she has pica?
Our Westie Lexie loves going for walks. However, the dog we had before (another Westie), did not, and preferred simply riding in the car. It all depends on the dog.

Now though, Lexie’s getting older and she’s getting arthritis and some days she limps. (That’s what the vet told us when we took her in) So she can’t always go for a walk.
As for how you talk to your animals, I threaten my cats all the time, but I don’t know if it does any good. Earlier today I told Annie that if she didn’t stop teasing the dog\*, I was going to cut her tail off and beat her with it. She just sat there and looked at me.

\*[sub]Lexie likes to sit on the back of the sofa and look out the window. Annie loves to go behind said sofa and scratch at the back, and Lexie proceeds to go nuts and bark her head off, tearing at the sheet covering the sofa. (She’ll do this when Lexie’s sleeping on the sofa as well, which makes it even worse) Then Annie waltzes out like it’s no big deal. It’s gotten so bad that Lexie starts barking as soon as she sees Annie walk into the room. Stupid cat.[/sub]

Bing-fucking-go.

I know a guy who has had two dogs in the last five years – one he “had to give back” because it snapped at people and the one he kept jumps all over everyone and has to be behind a fence between the kitchen and livingroom when company is over. He has no idea why they are like they are when the only thing he ever does with them is throw them in their kennel, or shove them out into the back yard until they shit and piss.

No clue. Just bad luck, I guess.

And I do scream at my dog sometimes. Ok, it’s usually rhetorical questions like, “REALLY? WAS THAT NECESSARY, MIA?” as she’s doing something stupid like breaking the dead silence by barking at her reflection in the sliding glass door, but I mean, I guess that’s the same as beating the holy hell out of her. Rhetorical questions are hell on dogs ☹

I threatened to rip Mojo’s tongue out but to be fair he had just licked my eyeball. He just sat there looking proud of himself.

Some dogs need walks, some don’t. The real problem we have is Kaia is super high energy and needs long walks while Mojo the lump prefers to stop for a nap mid walk and neither of them is happy away from the other. It’s a fun balancing act made slightly easier through Kaia’s intense love of her Kong frisbee.

Yeah, for some reason the phrase “stuck up cunts” keeps insinuating itself into my thought process–must be the tampons.

My guys don’t require walks, per se, but the gods help me if I miss their late afternoon ball session out front. They have alarm clocks in their heads and when it’s time they lose their shit until I take them out and tire them out. It’s a great opportunity for training and socialization, making them sit quietly while I put on my shoes, slobber gloves and get the ball, then they have to go out to the dirt street and sit patiently until I throw the first ball. I do changeups and throw in different directions to favor one dog over the other and make them go get a drink when they’re obviously getting tired, and then give them the sign language “all done” when it’s time to go back in. I can miss one day if it’s raining really badly but never two–and these are dogs who get a shit ton of exercise chasing each other around the back yard, wrestling each other and playing stupidy fence aggression games with passing walkers, other dogs and kids on bikes. They just need their pack time with me regardless of whatever other exercise they get.

And yes, sometimes if I’m tired or just got home from a heinous day and the dogs are antsy and the cats are bugging for their gushyfud I get a little irritated, but I have never beat them up for being who they are–they can’t help it they miss me and are overjoyed the pack is back together, it’s what animals DO. Whenever one of the cats comes in every other animal has to check him out to see what he’s been up to, and the dogs always check each other out if they’ve been separated at all. I just don’t see getting pissy for being treated the same as the other critters, plus some extra enthusiasm for being the alpha and getting back from an absence which always was, of course, forever.

Our dog goes for walks mostly because that way she gets to smell the world beyond our house. And she gets to see people. And see other dogs (and smell them.) And if she hasn’t had a poop that day, a walk brings it on. It’s not just about the exercise; it’s mostly about stimulation.

If I enjoy the scenery, the exercise, the weather, or critiquing the neighbourhood yards and gardens, for the dog, it’s a different experience, one that’s mostly viewed from her nose. Smelling her own yard is boring. She really likes to smell _different_ things. I don’t blame her. I’d hate it if I only had one book to read over and over and over…

It seems like every post I see of yours (I thought you were done with this?) you show how little you know of the subject, as well as your poor ability to comprehend what you read. What I said was the only thing a walk is _needed_ for is if it is necessary for the dog to find some place to do it’s business. Yes, a walk can be to help relieve boredom, tho the average person isn’t going to be able to walk far enough often enough to do much for a large dog. A walk can also help with pack dynamics, tho far too many pet people just let their dog drag them down the sidewalk, so it ends up being counterproductive.

The whole point is, **Papsett** said she didn’t have time every day to walk her dogs and you all jumped on her like she said she was locking them in a closet and claimed that walks are necessary for all dogs. It’s just not true, yet like a loon (do I hear an echo?) you not only try to hold fast to your belief that all dogs must be walked daily, you try to claim I said things I never got close to saying.

Jaysus, another one. Do you honestly think that any of that is true? For one thing, most pet owners let their dogs lead, so that’s out. Next, a dog that chooses to walk behind you for it’s own reasons isn’t learning anything about being “part of the pack” - training does far more for that than any walk. Next, no one has said anything about running “around in the back yard until they shit on the bush”. Are you people so totally non-dog savvy that you cannot think of anything except walked dog must equal happy dog, and dog in backyard must equal bored dog? Is this some new PETA campaign?

The thing you continue to miss is that I am not trying to support any one person here. I, like you all, don’t know near enough about **Papsett** to make any judgments as to whether or not she is a good dog owner and that is the whole point. None of us knows enough about the situation to know if there is any reason for concern, but boy the usual suspects can’t stop and ask a couple of polite questions can they? Nope, they just - ahem - wade in with both guns blazing, make accusations, making demands, making insults. Of course, with you it isn’t just **Papsett** you are eager to make the worst possible assumptions about, but since such things don’t bother me, I’m still here and she isn’t. We may never know the truth because assholes like you couldn’t wait to beat up on someone when they showed a bit of weakness.
