At this point, can we just make this an open spollers thread?

FYI, [here is a gift link](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/17/business/theranos-fraud-elizabeth-holmes-documentary.html?unlocked_article_code=1.J1E.WjwT.pirrqQBh1LIn&smid=url-share) to a New York Times article by John Carreyrou giving his opinion on the movie. He was a journalist with the Wall Street Journal who first exposed the Theranos fraud. (Currently he is an investigative reporter for the business section of the New York Times.)

Seeing that Nathan Fielder is known for playing with the truth and pulling ones over on his audience, has anyone put out the theory that the whole thing is a fabrication that all of them were in on. Fielder, Oppenheim, Holmes, Evans.

It seems unlikely Holmes or Evans would be in on it - their reputation is at stake, and it’s not a flattering depiction of either of them.

I have considered that Holmes and Evans concocted some meticulously planned out bullshit, that Fielder disrupted it, but that Fielder’s emotional response was staged. (I don’t think so, but it’s possible.) The rivalry between the two men was probably planned by the directors. I’ve even considered that Fielder is lying about what Holmes said during the prison interview. Or the opposite, that Holmes green-lit having Sayfried put words in her mouth.

I’m realizing at least some of the emotional reactions Holmes had to unfolding events were probably faked. She does this whole sob story in the film about how her image was used to promote Theranos like it was against her will, and I found an interview with _People_ she did in September of this year. So I don’t think she’s as afraid of the spotlight as she pretends to be.

I’d be remiss not to share Man Carrying Thing’s 1-minute synopsis of the film:

I think I’m unfortunately coming to that conclusion as well. I was sort of interested but having read all the spoilers here and elsewhere (spoilers simply do not bother me, particularly in documentaries), I think this film might annoy me. I really rather dislike documentarians that inject themselves into their documentaries.

I think I might find Nathan Fiedler insufferable and, if some of what I’ve read is accurate, perhaps even a bit contemptible and unethical. I’m not sure I’m interested in suffering that for the sake of good art.

I have a hard time recommending Nathan Fielder to people, I couldn’t stand him until he starred in Benny Safdie’s HBO series _The Curse_, which I thought was brilliant. That made me go back and watch _The Rehearsal_ finally, and I started to appreciate him more. But at the same time, the criticisms from airline pilots about S2 of _The Rehearsal_ are valid, which means his portrayal of some things is problematic. Also he can be pretty annoying if you’re not into whatever he’s doing.

But I do want to address the “documentarians shouldn’t inject themselves into the documentary” comment. Under normal circumstances, yes, absolutely. This, however, was a vanity documentary gone wrong. It was never going to be a “real” look at anything. Elizabeth Holmes is broke, but her husband Billy Evans is independently wealthy. And yet, for the purposes of this documentary, they rented a beach house in San Diego – it was not filmed “at their home,” it was filmed at _a_ home that they specifically chose because it didn’t look ostentatious. Old house, hadn’t been updated since the '70s – they wanted to portray a particular image to the world and so they tried to manipulate this documentary into existence AND profit off it like other vanity documentaries (according to a card displayed at the end of the film, they ultimately decided not to take money from it).

So it was never going to be a real documentary, and everyone knew it. Which is why, halfway through it, it breaks the 4th wall and changes tone entirely.

I think he’s great, but I think you could have a field day with the ethics questions surrounding his work. In the first episode of _The Rehearsal_ (spoiler for episode 1) he is helping a man who told a lie to his friends that got out of hand. First Fielder reveals that he hired an actor to stand in for the guy himself and that he secretly recreated the man’s entire apartment and rehearsed all the interactions they’ve just had. Then he walks the guy through a literal replica of the bar where he’s going for trivia night and they rehearse the conversation he’s going to have with a stand-in for his friend where he comes clean and all the eventualities that might arise, including the worst case scenario where his friend rejects him. The guy is really insistent that he must win his trivia night and he must win it fair and square.

But his obsession with winning trivia is distracting him from coming clean. So Fielder takes a walk with him where he’s orchestrated several subliminal clues to that night’s trivia questions (which he found in advance.) It’s actually pretty hilarious. Anyway the guy wins at trivia and his friend forgives him and he’s very happy.

At which point, Fielder comes clean with the guy who just came clean, admitting he orchestrated the answers to the trivia. The man bursts into tears, tells Fielder he ruined everything, and then tells him he’s a terrible person. Except if you look back at the scene, it’s not the real guy telling him that, but the stand-in actor. The real guy reacts positively to a compliment but it’s not clear if he actually told the real guy what he told the actor.

The level of detail in both the recreations of the house and the bar strain credulity. And it puts everything into question. Is the trivia guy himself even real? If he was, was it unethical of Fielder to plant the answers to the trivia questions? You might find yourself trying to justify it because the guy lied to his friends for ten years about having a master’s degree - is what Fielder did any worse? Is it possible he talked to the man’s friend beforehand and divulged the man’s secret? Or is it possible literally every moment of this was performance art?

Personally I loved the episode mostly as a neurodivergent person with social anxiety it was an exquisite and accurate representation of the hell we go through in social situations. And this wasn’t just something tossed off thoughtlessly to make a funny show, every moment felt intentional and pointed. This is done to evoke both feeling and thought. To raise very specific questions.

The reason I’m sharing this is because my impression is that Fielder is a kind of magician. But he’s the kind where you know you just saw something spectacular but you can’t exactly say what it was.

That’s very much how I felt watching the film.

Fielder went to great lengths and in my estimation some personal risk to verify that Holmes - a woman nobody was supposed to feel any sympathy for - was safe in her relationship and informed about the myriad ways Evans was controlling and undermining her. That’s an ethical win in my book.

I guess it comes down to whether you think Fielder was being real emotionally, and I think he was. I think he was both emotionally affected and trying to figure out what the hell was going on.

Saw this today and it is still swimming around in my brain. While Billy is nothing but a douche nozzle, I have to admit that I left the film not being sure if Elizabeth is an extremely talented con artist or woman on the spectrum who has been used by the men in her life. I lean towards the former but a little part of me can’t completely dismiss the latter.

Amazing how this film unfolded. I did not feel the time.

She could be both. One of the things I liked about the film is that it showed someone can potentially be both a perpetrator and a victim. Although the truth of her relationship with Evans seems a lot more complicated than abuser-victim. He seems just as delusional as she is. Maybe they are made for each other.

One thing I’ve also thought about is that while she’s in prison, Evans controls access to her children (along with everything else.) So maybe she only said she trusted him because she didn’t want to lose her children.

Hard to say.

> It really must be seen without knowing the spoilers. I don’t know why people want things like this spoiled for them if you have any interest in the film at all.

Because for those of us who don’t watch many movies, we want some idea of what it actually _is_ before deciding whether to see it.

And reading the extremely helpful spoilers here, I’m definitely in the, “nope, not planning to watch it” category. If a friend does a group viewing, i might go? But it sounds like an unpleasant movie, even if it’s artistically interesting.
