Someone who’s too young/underexposed/whatever to have read the books before, starts really enjoying this ‘new’ story. And then they go and unload this bombshell on him in a trailer. O’course, it could be that the trailer just intrigues him more, and leaves the poor bugger hanging on for 6 months, dying to know **what** happened with that… so maybe he reads the books, finally… But still. Damn. The occasional surprise is nice, too. ---

From what I’ve heard, the appearance of the W…errr, Gandalf is indeed a bone thrown to the hardcore LOTR fans. Jackson did some sort of survey of what fans would like to see in a TTT trailer, and the overwhelming response was you-know-who. To add the perspective of someone who has read the books a zillion times: I was very disappointed that they showed Gandalf in the trailer. Not that it spoils the surprise, I know what’s going to happen, but I’d rather see it within the film. I knew the Balrog was going to be found in Moria in FOTR, but my amazement and delight when I finally saw the Big Guy on film was fantastic. Seeing Gandalf again as the W…err… you know… would have been very cool. Now its somewhat spoiled. Not that I won’t go see the movie anyway… ---

Despite having read the books umpteen times m’self, I started thinking Jackson was going to take a Lovecraftian approach to the Balrog; shroud him in shadows, never give you a good look, and shoot the sequence around these constrictions. And then, there it was. It was a similar experience (for me) to seeing the first shot of the Brachiosaurus in the first **Jurassic Park**. The little kid who still lives in the back of my head yelled out, “Cool, man!” and started jumping up and down on the theater seat. [/Hijack] ---

sorry treis, I don’t have any sympathy either. When I heard that the movies were coming out, the first thing I did (after a robust woohoo!) was to read the LoTR to my kids, so that they would have the literary pleasure before the movie pleasure. Gandalf would kick the Star Destroyer’s ass. Even Vadar said that the power of the Death Star was insignificant compared to the power of the Force, and I think that the power of the Force is insignificant compared to the power of a Maiar. And the scene would be oh so much cooler yet, than the Yoda fighting scene. ---

I’m one of the worthless souls who has never gotten around to reading the trilogy, and I would have been VERY VERY surprised had Gandolf not returned in the next film.
