You know, we should chat about global warming

Meh, the seething hostility and habit of endlessly responding to things no one here has actually said reminds me very much of old Haberdash. I wonder if they wear the same color socks?

Yawn.

Cocoa Beach, Florida here. My backyard extends for 80 feet. After that the beach turns into the Atlantic Ocean. I’ve owned this property for almost 20 years. Amazingly enough, on average the sea water is still the same distance from my back sliding glass window as it was when I bought this house…As it was with the owner before me…As it was when it was built…As it was when this entire country was discovered…

But next year the glaciers will melt and the seas will rise right??

Right???

And I’m sure you measured this regularly, and accounted for the necessary variables. Because you clearly know so much about sea level rise, as well as what, precisely, the peer-reviewed literature on AGW predicts.

No, you got me on that one. I do absolutely none of that.

I do however walk my happy ass down to the water and surf everyday. At night I enjoy cooking out and having some drinks with friends while staring at the waves. In fact I’m staring at them right now…Anyways, aside from the occasional storm the high tide pretty much never threatens my boardwalk.

I could probably easily sell it to some liberal New York transplant who totally believes in global warming but my hypocrisy threshold is only so high…also my tan totally kicks ass…

Meh.

You could do a Google scholar or Google News search for flooding in Florida related to climate change and get a bunch of non-biased articles from universities, NASA, NOAA, insurance companies, regional governments, etc… I even started to link to some of them in this post but decided it wasn’t worth my time.

Look, I don’t know what your elevation is there in Cocoa Beach; 7 feet? 12 feet? It doesn’t really matter. If you are high enough, you may not be affected by rising seas in your lifetime. I have family in similar circumstance in South Carolina that has coastal land 24 feet above sea level and, like you, they scoff at the reports of rising seas. That does not mean it is not happening, just that they don’t see it and are not affected.

I work at KSC on occasion, about half the launches with instruments I have worked on go up from there. Last time I was there (MAVEN), I noted that NASA was working on shoring up their beaches using re-nourishment (Google it if you wish) as climate change was having an impact. I also note that more than half the coastal counties in Florida (including yours) have dredging projects to combat the effects of rising seas by building up beaches with dredging. Your 80 feet may even benefit from this.

Whatever. To be perfectly honest and sincere, I really don’t care what you believe. I am sure that the next several decades will make it pretty clear to all but the most obtuse what the story is. Those who have it wrong now might include you, or it might include me. Time will certainly tell. That said, I would put 20 bucks on me being right on this issue.

Is it like the hottest tan in town?? You sound like you get lots of chicks.

No one who has posted to this thread has claimed that sea levels will rise noticeably over a one year period. No one I know of who has any authority on climate change has put forward such an argument. You are (not for the first time) committing the logical fallacy of the straw man argument.

Now in regards to your demand that we answer a bunch of garbled questions based on misunderstandings about climate change, by a right-wing pundit with no expertise in the field, here is a handy link for you. If you dispute any of the information there, feel free to ask for clarification. I work for a living and therefore don’t have endless amounts of time to do your research for you, but perhaps someone else will be willing to help you with your self-education.

Let’s celebrate with Hurricane Patricia, coincidentally the strongest hurricane ever recorded.

Well, of course we can’t know whether there were stronger ones prior to the advent of modern instrumentation, but agreed, I wouldn’t want to be out in that thing in your user name.

You know, I’m going to send you a bill for my bullshit meter. It’s registering so far into the red now that it’s speaking Russian and wanting May 1st off.

But you are entertaining. Sort of like watching the waves crashing through some conceited actors beachfront Malibu home during a winter storm.

My name is canned j mayhem, millionaire. I own a mansion and a yacht.

Also, my penis is very large and I’m better than you.

I know this because I tell people about it on the internet.

You’re not better than me! I’m better than me!

I’m better than both of us put together.

You know, we need a good weather chat thread… As a lifelong weather watcher and ocean person, I used to periodically read this thread and never could figure out just what the heck FX was arguing for…or against…or anything:smack:

Wait until a Sandy x Patricia sized storm crosses the Gulf Stream, to the west, instead of being steered North by it. Bye bye Florida sand bar.

Texas is going to get some serious water dumped on it from Patricia.

Our antagonist would be out surfing those hurricane waves and storm surge, bravely showing mother nature she’s totally wrong and he’s the king of the world.

I’ve got to say that if this thread genuinely turns into another never-ending global warming troll debate thread, I’m going to be seriously annoyed will you all.

[Kryten’s voice]
Well sir, I have to point out that only a smeghead would had expected it to not turn into one of those threads.

However, I do see your point and it is really different than the one seen in the head of guys like canned mayhem. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, I thought we were having a little innocent fun, now that it’s safe to say “climate change” without a one-page wall of text and “SCIENCE! Bitches” coming flying back. But the OP was vague. Maybe this should be over in GD and we should be discussing the impact of climate change to global sea levels over the next 30 years, especially FL. Because apparently our new friend is about to lose his house. (We don’t have enough emojis. I need a crocodile tear one.)

People kept trying to engage FXM for years, no matter how stupid his posts.

The current troll makes FXM look like Stephen Hawking, and he’s obviously only posting to taunt people rather than because he knows anything at all about the subject, yet some people are still responding to him as if he’s making an argument.

Maybe we could add (And Trolling) to the Marketplace forum. There’s plenty of room for more traffic there. Apparently we have a whole lot of posters who love being trolled and engaging with them. Why they don’t just go to the comments sections on newspaper stories or YouTube videos I have no idea.
