OK, fine, if it’s a Usenet thing, then at least that goes \*some \*way towards explaining it (I wish someone has said so in the first place). Still, the whole thing with “I don’t want to annoy, and I don’t want attention, so I’ll respond by clinging to this annoying and attention-seeking behavior until you pry it from my dead hands” still seems block-headed to me. ---

… “Here’s the thing”: I don’t know how many daily posts I have, but since I can no longer work, interacting with you Dopers is _it_ for me as far as any kind of conversation goes. _Because_ this conversation and you all are so important to my daily life, my “Thanks, Q, Quasi, Bill,”, etc. are _only_ my way of returning some of that “warmth” I get back when we “talk”. It’s no different to me than the end of a letter. But… if it bothers you to the point where you feel you have to “cool down” or refer to my “blockheadedness”, then it obviously bothers you to the point where you may find me offensive, and it may be better for you not to even _see_ any of my threads/posts. Hence the suggestions to ignore me. Believe it, I am not here to cause _anyone_ so much anguish that they have to cool down, and I hate that you feel this way, because I feel like I’ve lost a friend I’ve never met. But if it does bother you that much, maybe it’s best that we say, “Okay, we tried, but it just isn’t working. See ya’!” And that’s pretty much all I know to say about this anymore. Thanks Q ---

Sort of off track here, but on a similar subject: there is a woman at work who leaves lengthy voice mails and signs off them as though they’re formal letters. “Hello, wonder lust. This is Anna. Could you please call me back? I need your help. [Blah, blah, blah]. Thanks (pause for comma) Anna.” I say this with more affection than irritation because she’s the cutest little 60 year old Russian lady you ever did see. She’s kind and sweet and her accent is adorable. The sign off makes me giggle every time. If it were anyone but her, though, I’d be ranting about it instead.
