I don’t own any of the ‘classic’ style of plastic, y-shaped thong flip flops. I’ve never, ever liked them and can’t bring myself to like them now.

I have several pair from JCrew. They have a collection that have silk fabric as the thong material; they’re very cute. I another pair that feature braided leather for the thong. I have another pair that has turquoise stones in the thong. I have another pair that has beautiful crystals in the thong with a leather sole. I have a couple pair of Oakleys–they’re a little more athletic-looking than the others. That’s all I can think of off the top of my head.

I like them because they can be dressed up or dressed down (obvious in the case of the latter) and I ain’t gettin’ pedicures for nothin’ over here.

> I wish Old Navy sold Havainas but they don’t that I’ve seen (at least not here or online). Target sold them one year about three years back and that’s where my ancient “good” pair comes from. I need a new pair and my Target Havainas pair has outlasted three different pairs of Old Navy flip flops. The rubber of the Havaianas is different from the foam of the Old Navy flip flips; it’s denser and stays springy and uncompacted.

I have a pair of those that I use when showering at the gym. Those things will last for years and years. My grandad wore them pretty much all the time when he retired and they would last forever. My grandmother would throw them out when they got really nasty and worn. They were pretty cheap so he would get a few pair at a time.

Personally as a 38-year old male, I despise them and any shoe-like thing that shifts about unpredictably. I want nothing but solid, steady footwear. However just to validate **Dinsdale** …

A women and her shoes:

Note the top entry on flip-flops and their variable nature as a cheap disposable to be collected by the dozen in the right season.

Oh and also note she considers multiple pairs to only count as ONE pair of shoes in her list of 49 ( one unshot ) :p.

I’ll keep this in mind… I don’t really want to pay 50 dollars for sandals, but if I find some that I just can’t live without…

But right now, I’m terribly poor, so I’ll pass.

>
> They are still called thongs. Butt-floss underwear articles are also called thongs. This is possible because, believe it or not, the words are used by different groups of people. I doubt most 21st century pretty young things here would have ever worn the footwear variety, and most beer-gutted middle-aged blokes aren’t about to wear G-strings.
>
> I think they’re called flip-flops here sometimes, but I’m not sure. I call them thongs, because that’s what I grew up with. They’re normally sold outside Chinese shops in a bucket with $2 scrawled on a piece of paper, so I can’t be sure exactly what everyone else calls them. To confuse the issue further, the New Zealanders call them ‘jandals’.
>

> Confused? I am.

Aren’t G-strings and thongs different? G-strings, from my understanding, have less fabric than a thong. I have some thongs (the kind that you wear under pants), and they could definitely have some fabric removed and serve their purpose.
