I’ve just been on a jaunt this morning to try to find the origins of singalong parts to songs like “Sweet Caroline” and “Lucille.” I remember going to see this one man band in San Jose in 1985… guy’s name was Frank Joseph and he did both of those. He claimed to have invented the Lucille parts, but it was a little different than the one cited here. I don’t remember it exactly, but it started with “you bitch, you slut, you slime-sucking whore” and finished with “you make me sick!”

I went back a few years later and he expressed chagrin that other people had been stealing his bit.

Frank Joseph was the first person I heard it from too. Would have been @Mountain Charley’s sometime about 1990. I didn’t realize that was something that he (presumably) made up himself.

Thank you to the person who remembered the name Frank Joseph it’s been so long since I’ve heard that. Here is how I remember his version… you bitch you whore you acumbag you slut. You slime you dog you bloodsucking worm you bimbo you buthole and you make me sick…four hungry children…

Im sorry. I CAN’T be the only one. When I hear this song ( as I just did) I STILL add these lines to the chorus. “You picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille.” and I addd " you bitch, you slut, you whore. You suck, you swallow, you love it." Is it just me? Is my delequent college education shining through? Or do y’all do the same thing?

Strange–I’ve always added those lines to Away in a Manger.
