I was driving a few weeks ago and my phone went off, quite loudly, while I was driving. It scared the hell out of me, just to tell me that there was a storm in the area. For all the talk from the Feds about not using your phone when you drive, when it goes off like mine did I had to look and see what was wrong. These alerts are an ok idea, but, maybe they should be turned off if someone is moving at more then a few miles an hour. And no, my phone does not just make it sound like a text, it beeps, quite loudly, for a few seconds at least, much like the EMS on the TV does. Even with the sound down/off like my phone almost always is. ---

Date has now been changed: “A majority of cell phone users will receive an alert on Wednesday, October 3, with the header “Presidential Alert” and the message, “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. I’m still trying to underatnsd what kind of imminent event could possibly occur that: 1. Would affect the entire United States, and 2. Is time sensitive enough that knowing about it now gives people a chance to do something that finding out about it a few hours later or not at all, you being dead and all, makes a difference. I can see that people might want to call their family, but really – good luck getting through. I can see where religious types want to say a last Act of Contrition or something, but is that worth the horrific panic that the text would cause? I suspect the Russian hackers are already working on how to access the system. A good, well-timed panic could be very useful to them. ---
