This actually happened to me this year. I was given a $500 Visa card at work for hitting a years of service milestone. I could have spent it on groceries but that wasn’t the intent of the gift and I felt like I would be cheating myself if I did that. I bought an iPad Mini and the outrageously overpriced Smart Case to house it. We have no real need for an iPad (does anyone?) so I was never willing to spend my own money on one. ---

I’d buy a cart full of exactly what groceries I wanted, including whatever cuts of meat, fish and cheese I want. I’d buy the bread I like best regardless of whether it’s on sale or I have a coupon. I’d throw a bunch of flowers in the cart. I might decide that the groceries are for a dinner party. Or I’d have my bedroom professionally painted. Or I’d take mandolin lessons. The last time I had money enough to spend on something just for me I bought a mandolin. There are a lot of free how-to videos online, but I think regular lessons would help me pick up skills in a sensible order. ---

If I was being practical, I’d get someone in to deal with the mildew the landlord won’t take care of. But I wouldn’t be practical. I’ve been wanting a really nice suit for a while, and fell in lust with the designs and fabrics of the tailor who took in my evening coat earlier this year. So I would use my £310 as the deposit on my three-piece. ---
